Tools and Hardware Reviews of ITW Space Compressible Bag BRS-9212ZG Vacuum-Seal Travel Roll Bags, Set of 4Customer Review: Just what we needed for our trip Summary: 5 Stars
Since baggage is costly on the airlines these bags really helped condense our luggage as well as put any bed bug worries at bay. My daughters used them and were thrilled that they only had to check one bag with these instead of the customery two for the week trip. Fabulous deal for travelers!
Customer Review: Medium carry-on fits only so much Summary: 3 Stars
I've only used the space bag on one trip and the medium sized bag worked well for two thin beach towels. However on the way back apparently over stuffed bag opened on its own I believe due to the pressure change on the airplane as it is practically impossible to squeeze all air out. Also the little plastic bit that you are supposed to slide to seal the bag came off but on the other hand it is easy yet a little annoying to put it back on.
Customer Review: More room in your suitcase *UPDATED 5/2010* Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased these since I travel a lot. I always prefer to travel all carry on. Sometimes my bag needs a little more space. These seem to help. They are basically like a very large ziplock bag with a special zipper. The zipper allows you to roll up your clothes to get our all of the air from the bag. By doing this, your bags become a lot thinner. They are very easy to use. Although in the process of using them, I made a few observations:
1. In a smaller suitcase (like a carry on) you may not get the full value from these. They work better in a larger suitcase.
2. Most airlines have a 50lb weight limit on suitcases. Compressing out the air out of your clothes doesn't remove weight. So you may want to verify how heavy your bags are before you get to the airport.
3. Since I was able to get so much more in my carry on bag, TSA had to hand check it. They claimed that the machine couldn't see through everything I had in there. Fortunately, they didn't want to open up and look in all of these space bags. During this hand check I realized that it is possible that the may want to and how big of a pain that would be.
None of these things are deal breakers for these. You just need to use them a few times and figure out the best way that they can work for you. I am anxious to see how they are going to work for an upcoming family Vacation for My wife and I are taking our three kids on.
UPDATE: MAY 2010
I have noticed that these rip easily. I mean, it is a glorified ziplock bag. I went on a trip and the bag ripped, so now all the stuff that fit into my carry on bag had to be really shoved back in to get home. YMMV
Customer Review: Not helpful Summary: 1 Stars
I bought them for a trip to Egypt to make more room at the end of the trip. The locking tab broke right away, while the others were too small. Overall, they were about as productive as a baggie. I didn't use them at all. I just folded better. Alas.
Customer Review: Poorly Made & Doesn't Really Save Space Summary: 2 Stars
These bags are not worth the price you pay for them. They're essentially giant Zip-Loc bags, and honestly, I think I can achieve the same result with a Zip-Loc bag.
It does remove all the air out of the bag by rolling the bag filled with clothes, and it is vacuum sealed. However, when I opened the bag to get my clothes out, the zipper ripped the bag along the top edge rendering it useless. So my suggestion, if you decided to buy this product, be careful on how you open the bag.
The other issue I have is with its usefulness. The bags don't really save that much room in my luggage. You're restricted to how you pack because all your clothes are restricted to the bag. In the end, I was able to pack more items in my luggage without the bags by just tightly rolling up my clothes into logs.
