Tools and Hardware Reviews of InSinkErator Evolution Excel 1.0 HP Household Food Waste Disposer

Customer Review: As Quiet As Advertised. Low Vibration, Too
Summary: 5 Stars

We had an InSinkErator Badger 5 that went out on us after giving us a couple years of trouble with jams, shorts, and our pipes backing up with poorly-ground food. We were sick of dealing with all the problems of a lesser model, so we went higher end in the hopes of having more power, finer ground particles of food, and fewer jams.

We did a bit of research and noticed Consumer Reports actually recommends the 1 HP Waste King L-8000 Legend as the best performing disposer, but they recommended the 1 HP Evolution Excel if noise was a concern. As it turns out, we have three kids under three years old, and because of sensitivity to their napping and the fact that we could get a good deal on installation of the Evolution Excel, we opted for it over the Waste King.

The first thing I'll point out is I'd have absolutely no qualms about running the disposer while my kids were napping. It's as quiet as you hear in Amazon's video, though I discovered if you have a double-bowl kitchen sink, you have to put the plug in the second bowl when the disposer is running or lose most of the benefit. The sound running through the pipes is still relatively loud.

It also feels like there may be even less vibration than our old Badger 5, which had half the power (though it was getting old)!

All in all, we love the disposer so far! You pay a premium for fine grinding, power and most of all quietness, but if that appeals to you, you'll be happy with the Evolution Excel!

Customer Review: Best Quiet Disposal
Summary: 5 Stars

I love this disposal! It was a Christmas present from my son. For several years I had been hinting for a new disposal so this Christmas under the tree I found an envelope of money with the words 'Garbage Disposal' written on the front. Amazon delivered it right to my door. I have installed lots of disposals, mostly low cost Insinkerator models. Installation was easy and the instructions were clear. This model came with two sets of mounting screws, long and short. I have a heavy cast iron sink which required the short screws. The discharge tube attaches to a rubber outlet with a hose clamp. The rubber piece at the mouth of the disposal where you put the food is easily removable for cleaning. Once installed, I turned on the water and flipped the switch. I heard an almost inaudible hum which made me wonder if it was working. I poured some ice cubes down it and sure enough it quietly ground them up. I've used this disposal for several weeks now and each time I turn it on I'm amazed at how much pleasure I get from seeing a mechanical gadget work so well. For the first few days I couldn't pass by the sink without turning on the switch. We put all food remains down the disposal -- bones, corn cobs and husks, potato peelings, peach pits, banana peels. If we don't eat it, it goes in the disposal. We don't want any food odors in the trash we put on the curb that might attract an animal since we like to put out a plastic trash bag without using a trash can. My previous disposal was a Maytag FC-5 which was about 35 years old. It would grind anything but the undercutter blades had worn out and I often had to unstop it with a plunger. This new Insinkerator has undercutter blades too and they're great at slicing food that doesn't grind. My only complaint is that it's so quiet it's not easy to tell when it's finished grinding -- but that's ok!

Customer Review: Best disposer I have ever purchased
Summary: 5 Stars

Very, very quiet, just as described. The disposer works great and is whisper quiet. What more can you ask for. Installed easy. This product is very heavy compared to my old Insinkerator Badger 5, however it didnt seem to be an issue when I installed it on the sink.

Customer Review: Best disposer yet.
Summary: 5 Stars

I replaced a 3/4 horsepower Waste King that was giving good service as long as we were careful with what we put through it. My wife saw a commercial for the Evolution Excel and wanted one. After doing research on its performance, I found it for $249.00 at Home Depot. Reports of its quietness are not exaggerated. This is the quietest disposer I have barely heard! Performance has been outstanding. I ground up a pineapple top just to see if it lived up to the hype - I was amazed. Shortly after I installed it, I tried to install my old disposer in a small kitchen at my church only to find that the drain was too high. The old unit at church was a Insinkerator that had been giving trouble for years - frequent clogs, blown fuses, etc. As facilities manager, I had to replace the old unit. While I am very conscious of saving money (my reason for donating my old unit) I also believe that buying cheap is false economy. I was able to find the same deal at another Home Depot. In our area Home Depot is no longer going to carry this model in the stores, but it is worth paying full price. Drain matched perfectly. I expect calls to clear clogs will be history.

Word of caution. You will need another person to hold down the flange in order to secure it to the sink. This unit is heavier and larger than most other units. I struggled with the first unit until I got the jack from my Toyota truck. At 65 I no longer have the arm strength to hold the unit up and fasten the bayonet latch at the same time. The second unit was a breeze to install. Make sure you save the power cord and cord clamp from your old unit or buy a replacement. Plan to make a trip to the hardware store to match your plumbing - consider yourself fortunate if the included parts are sufficient. Make sure to punch out the plug at the dishwasher connection. Removing that plug may be challenging if you have big hands. Needle nose pliers help.

Customer Review: Best of the Best
Summary: 5 Stars

We tired of replacing garbage disposals and decided to buy the best. We are delighted with this product. Our plumber had never installed one before and he was impressed. This is one reliable and powerful disposer and we are pleased with it and the service we received from Amazon.
