Let me preface by saying that I have exceptionally cold feet. Even in the summer.
First off, this thing does not smell so bad. It has a faint scent of rubber, and does NOT "stink up the room" or anything. I'm using it right now, and can smell it, but it's slight. Then again, I never found the smell of rubber repugnant.
The unit does not put out an enormous amount of heat. However, if you keep your feet on it for an hour+, yes it keeps/gets them warm. While it's not nearly as effective as a space heater on your feet at full-blast, at 90W (compared to 1500W with space heater @ full blast), this mat delivers FAR more than 1/16th the overall warmth and comfort. I'd say it provides 1/2 the heat and comfort of a heater on full-blast, which is very impressive for 90W.
This is quite the bargain. If you use space heaters on your feet like I do everyday, you'll save the $30 in a matter of a month or so. It is safe, low profile, and you don't have to move it -- keep it stationary at your computer desk. The low wattage is the key to the praise, here. In a perfect world, this pad would put out more heat -- but I'm satisfied at 90W.

I opened the package and left the box in the house, to run the mat in the garage as another reviewer suggested. Later the smell from the box alone wafted through 3 rooms, and I had to put it in the garage. I left it running 12 hours, by which time my garage smelled absolutely awful, and the house was permeated just by opening and closing the door. I just had to unplug it - we couldn't stand it. I actually thought that maybe I had hit a skunk with my car, but when we unplugged the mat, boxed, and bagged it, the smell went away. It heated up really nicely, but there's no way to live with the smell. Maybe they use different rubber sources for different batches??Customer Review: Adequate for me - as expected

I read most of the reviews before buying this mat from Amazon, so I had knowledge aforehand. The mat does smell when new - just like auto tires and other genuine rubber items I've used, naturally when heated it may smell stronger; I might add it is surprisingly heavy for the size. It's an industrial product, so I expect a certain degree of coarseness that I wouldn't accept with a consumer item. To the buyers who wrote scathing reviews about how offensive it was, I suggest spending more time out of their refined "hothouse" lives. Yes, the suggestions for a thermostat control, and on/off switch are good ideas - and will likely result in a newer, improved version with such enhancements and higher price; - and more $ ending up in PRC China. The mat is perfect for warming footwear before venturing outside on a cold day! - it is great to use for drying wet shoes, thawing chilled feet and driving sensitive noses wild - hence, ideal when you have congestion. After six weeks of use, I find the aroma virtually gone, but I seldom keep the mat plugged in for more than twenty minutes at a time; one benefit of its dense mass is the retention and radiation of heat for some minutes after unplugging - and yes, it is barely tolerable if you are wearing just one pair of socks; so if you are considering buying this for a senior with poor circulation or low sensitivity, I might add a potential over-heating hazard - I'm sure that it is not an approved medical product and do believe there is golden potential for Homedic or another company to take note of this... and capitalize on it - hint, I'd be happy to be a guinea pig to test any new variations that come to market...Customer Review: Altadenalexus

This is the best product ever. My feet are always cold and this works better than a space heater. I use it all day at the office and I am never cold anymore.
