I bought two of these in 2003 because we keep our house fairly cool in winter and we work from a home office. We put one under each desk and attached a lamp dimmer (from Lampsplus) so we could run it at reduced power. At full power, it gets too warm for me. At about 30% power it keeps my feet nice and warm and we hardly notice an odor after the first days after bringing them in the house. After the first winter I had my mother buy one as a gift for my brother who works in a cool basement office and he likes his too. I think some people are more sensitive to the smell and some of the pads must smell more than others because it just hasn't been a problem with the two I bought in 2004.
** March 2007 - It was a colder winter here than the last 5 years. Our 2 outdoor dogs *really* enjoyed sleeping in the garage on the below freezing nights as we set up 2 of these pads hooked to lamp dimmers which were set on low to medium (full power is too hot). In the mornings one of the dogs didn't even want to be let out. If you have dogs that chew on cords, these pads are not suitable, but they worked for us. Of course, then I'd have to sweep the pad really good so I could use it in the office after the dogs were out.

I love my Cozy Toes. Have not noticed any odor as some have reported. I do disagree with the reviews stating that it gets so hot you have to order the hi-lo switch. I have not found this to be a fact. The temperature seems just right. I ordered the switch but will return it.Customer Review: Hot Stuff - No Smell

After reading the reviews I ordered this item with trepidation. I needed something to keep my feet warm in my cold basement office. I figured I could deal with the smell if it had one.
Bottom line - it's one hot pad (have to wear shoes; it's too hot with just socks) and there has been no rubber smell whatsoever. None.
