Tools and Hardware Reviews of Intermatic EJ500C Indoor Digital Wall Switch Timer

Customer Review: Pulled out and bought a different brand
Summary: 1 Stars

I am a woman and a college graduate. The instructions for this timer are so complicated and the work area to enter the instructions is so small that I finally gave up after hours of trying to work it. I went and bought a GE and will have the electrician take it out.
I do not recommend this product unless you are a graduate of MIT

Customer Review: Replaced a vintage 1990 3-way switch
Summary: 4 Stars

I had to replace a 1990 Intermatic 3-way switch that died in 2011. This replacement switch was easy to install to replace the dead one. The only negative is that the old one included a dimmer capability. I couldn't find such a replacement. So I'm happy with what I got. The programming is a little complex, so save the instructions. On the other hand, if the device works as stated with daylight savings time and sunset automatic adjustments, you'll never have to program the sucker again. It is also a little deeper than what it replaced so I had to be careful as I moved the house wiring around in the 3 switch box this beast was installed in. Again, a little more work for a replacement, but I couldn't find anything else on the market that was better. When you replace 20 year old electronics there is always some pain. I didn't need an aspirin for this job and didn't emit any four letter words!

Customer Review: Self adjusting timer
Summary: 5 Stars

I installed approx 5 timers prior to using this one , they all stopped working withing a few weeks of installation. The companies claim that they were installed incorrectly ... there are 2 wires , no guesswork ?. This one has been installed for almost a month and works perfectly. This model even adjusts for timezones. The installation and programming were very very simple. Great item

Customer Review: Simple Installation, flush mount, better battery system
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this unit to replace an older Intermatic unit that stopped working. The old unit used one AAA battery that I was replacing once a month (though the literature said it should last a year). The new unit uses a series of three watch batteries that are only needed in the event of a power outage. Nice, but it seems strange to me that I'd have a battery backup to power the timer when it's likely that the power will be out to the items it's controlling... Anyway, the unit installed simply and flush mounts to the wall -- nothing sticks out. It works great and I don't have to replace the batteries all the time. Great price, too.

Customer Review: So Far, So Good
Summary: 4 Stars

After going through three Intermatic SS8Cs in three years, I gave up on them and bought one of these. It's only been in a month so I can't speak to its long term reliability, but so far it's been working better than the SS8C. It's quieter - no mechanical switching (I guess it must be all electronic), it offers all the same programming options as the SS8C, plus it looks a bit sleeker on the wall. Not only that, it's cheaper than the SS8C by about $14. I did take off one star, though, because it's not DST 2007 compatible. I had to turn off its built-in DST feature and now I'll just manually spring forward and fall back.

Regarding compact fluorescent bulbs, last night we bought eight 40 watt-equivalent "n:vision" brand soft white compact fluorescent bulbs (9 watts, 550 lumens, green and white package) from Home Depot and installed them this morning. I was concerned they might not work since the packaging says the EJ500C is not compatible with compact fluorescent bulbs, but happily they do work absolutely fine! I took down eight 60 watt bulbs and am now saving 408 watts of electricity. The only thing I can think that might not make the EJ500C work with compact fluorescent bulbs is that it supposedly requires a load of at least 40 watts, so possibly too few compact fluorescent bulbs might not be enough of a power draw. For me, though, I'm happy to be saving electricity and hopefully I've got a porch light timer that will stay working more than one year.

UPDATE: After nearly three years, this still working fine, no problems like the old SS8C.
