Tools and Hardware Reviews of Intermatic EJ500C Indoor Digital Wall Switch TimerCustomer Review: GREAT TIMER - SET IT & FORGET IT! Summary: 5 Stars
I (a woman in my early 60's) ordered this to replace a broken wall switch timer to control two overhead porch lights and a pole lamp. We have an older home and the switch boxes are smaller. This timer fit in the box perfectly; and because it only has three wires to connect and the instructions were very simple to follow, I installed it very easily and quickly. (OF COURSE: TURN THE BREAKER OFF!) The instructions to set it up were very straight forward and if you follow them, it's ready for the self-adjusting setting.
I then replaced my regular 40W bulbs with CFL's and it still works perfectly! They've been in for about three months - no problems. Better yet, my electric bill went down almost $10!
Customer Review: Good Product - CFC issues expected Summary: 4 Stars
I have had this product for several years and I too have experienced problems with using it with CFC. At first it was a bit concerning when the CFC would flash when the switch was off. I also found that if at least one of the lights in the circuit was not CFC then everything was okay. I thought about it for a minute and realized that the issue depended upon which way power was provided to the lights. If the power was through the switch, then you would not see any issues with using just CFCs, but if the power comes through the light first (which is legal - ie. Code) then you would see some problems.
The only complaint I have is that with the change in when daylight savings starts now, there was no way to update the unit to know that.
Customer Review: Good but difficult Summary: 5 Stars
I love this timer. It does exactly what it says it does -- it adjusts for the changes in dailylight. It fits flush in the space.
Downsides are several but worth overcoming. Just be aware.
The writing on the unit is VERY small and hard to see.
The spaces are tight for fat fingers.
The unit fills the entire half of a switch box and in my case with new, thick wires and twist caps inside, I had to finagle and bend and adjust to make it fit the space. I had to remove the light switch next to it, use some of that space, and put the switch back in.
The programming is a touch confusing. So much so, that after I had given it my best shot, my wife had to do it to make it work.
But I'm glad I have it and would buy another the instant I had a need.
Customer Review: Good product, inadequate description Summary: 4 Stars
My husband installed this on our garage lights and I love it. One thing that is not mentioned in the description is that it is not recommended for use with fluorescent bulbs. Since we are trying to reduce energy consumption and using fluorescents throught out the home I am not happy about that. So far no real problems, but it says it can damage the switch so I am probably going to switch to using regular bulbs for the gagarge lights. So if you are using fluorescents don't buy this switch. Otherwise its great!
Customer Review: Good replacement for older product Summary: 4 Stars
I bought 2 of these to replace 2 of the older Intermatic mechanical auto switches, which had the known issue where they would die after ~ 12 months. So far the new switches have been great - silent, look much better, work supper well, easy to instal and setup. And I love the automatic DST adjustment. Good product for any switches you want to replace with an auto-timmer.
