Customer Review: Deckmate Deck Plank Gauge
Summary: 5 Stars

I had purchased one of these items years ago when I was building a deck. When I started putting down the boards for my latest deck I wanted to get a second Deckmate Deck Plank Gauge. I looked locally and no one carried them. I was already familiar with the product so I knew what I wanted.

I ordered two through Amazon, just in case needed three total. I should have ordered three. I'm using ten foot lumber for the deck boards and I could use one more.

The tool works great. It does exactly what it says it it will do. I have also used it to build a 5' Cedar privacy fence for my parents in law. One side has a 1/8" spacer and the other is a 3/16" spacer. With wood decking as with wood fencing if the boards are warped you can switch spacers very easy to keep the boards lined up. If you need to really clamp down on the spacer in lining up the boards you can still remove the Spacing Gauge. It stays slightly elevated off the work so it's easy to pry it out if you have to.

Overall this is the most handy tool I have found for spacing either deck boards or privacy fencing.

Customer Review: Essential tool for installing composite decking
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased 3 of these tools to install composite decking and found them to be essential in providing accurate spacing. I am using 20 foot deck boards and there is a fair amount of warping and bending in any board that long. Without the Johnson tool, I would have gone crazy trying to place 16 penny nails or sighting the spacing.

The holes are great for screw spacing, as well.

I have also just used the tools to space ceramic tile for the medallion on my deck. They worked great for that purpose, as well.

I have just ordered 3 more tools to make the remainder of the decking installation go faster.

Customer Review: Excellent product
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an excellent product. I used it to space and fasten composite deck planks. The two functions the device performs:

1. As a jig for locating nail holes. Since I chose traditional screws, the gauge, when aligned above a joist, allowed for me to punch the hole locations in two adjacent planks. It also worked to properly align fasteners on butt-joined decking. I used a 2x1/4" screws as centerpunches - and the job flew by.

2. To space the deckboards. The gauge has a side for 3/16" spacing, and if you flip it over, the gauge is 1/8" thick. I found having both thicknesses handy to ensure that my deckboards were running parallel to the house. If after a few boards, one side was creeping out of parallel, I simply used the thicker spacing to bring the boards in line with the house.

With two people and two gauges - any decking job will fly by.

Customer Review: Good tool! Should have bought 2
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a very good tool to have doing the decking. I wish I had bought 2 of them since I had 2 crews putting decking on at the same time.
