The condo where we stayed in Florida had one of these holders and my friend and I ordered them on the spot. The ease of use sold us immediately. As with many other reviewers, I ordered this item and originally really liked the design and performance. While not exactly stunning in its quality or styling, it worked as advertised and was fairly handsome. For the first three months the ratcheting mechanism worked fine, but one fateful day I tried to grab a sheet of paper towel and the ratcheting mechanism seemed to seize up and something apparently broke internally. Now it's a toss-up at any given time whether the thing will be locked-up and won't spin at all (without fiddling), or will spin freely with no resistance at all. Disappointing. The fact that this has happened to so many others leads me to believe that this is a clear design flaw that needs to be addressed by the manufacturer.
Oh, and one small correction of snapcrackle's review: The paper towel roll CAN be removed from the holder without unscrewing/removing anything. The decorative finial at the top of the roll holder is of a smaller diameter than the towel roll's core so changing/removing rolls is as simple as sliding it on/off the assembled holder.

Although the towel rack arrived with the small post slightly bent, it didn't seem to effect operation, so I was going to keep it. First roll of paper towels goes on, I hear the "click-click-click" sound as I pull off the first paper towel, and it works perfectly. Pull a few more, one sheet at a time, perfect. Call my wife in, she pulls a couple off, perfect. That evening, getting ready to eat dinner, go to pull our first paper towel for actual use-- and I get no "clicks", plus it pulls off several sheets instead of just one. Play with it some, nope, the ratcheting mechanism is broke, just as other reviewers here have reported. It's going back.

My package arrived, but it was broken. It was packaged with something else and clearly rolling around in the box getting slammed by the other item. The bar that holds the paper towels was wobbly and the piece that makes it work was cracked in half. Now I have to deal with shipping costs and the whole mess of packaging it up and sending it back. I could have bought it locally. This is the second time this has happened when ordering from Amazon. The last time I just kept the broken item. My Amazon shopping days are OVER!
As for the product itself........my sister and mom both have it and love it. That is why I ordered one.
