Tools and Hardware Reviews of Kidde KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk Plug-In Carbon Monoxide and Explosive Gas Alarm with Battery BackupCustomer Review: False explosive 'GAS' alarm in the middle of the night Summary: 1 Stars
Buyers beware; please check out the other reviews first before you make a purchase. The unit was working fine until after 1 year, the GAS alarm sounded in the middle of the night for no apparent reasons..no gas odor etc. Glad I checked out the reviews before I head out to buy a second unit.
Customer Review: False positives continued.... Summary: 1 Stars
As many have already written this unit gives too many false positives on the GAS side. The first time (about 8 years ago)I had the fire department out. No gas detection. I then bought a second identical unit, and placed them side by side to have a "second reading". After a year, the original GAS/CM unit was discarded because of going off all the time, while the second unit showed nothing. I bought a Carbon Monoxide only unit instead. Now my second Nighthawk is going off all the time and there is zero gas smell. I may try replacing the battery, however I'm not optimistic. I'll call Nighthawk, as others have suggested, to see if I can get a replacement CM unit only.
Customer Review: Flase Gas Alarms Summary: 2 Stars
I seem to be having the same problem with my unit as many other people have, and that is false gas alarms. The unit is only 1.5 years old, and is supposed to last for 7. We have now had 4 false gas alarms in about a month. The first one we thought was serious so we actually called the gas company who came out and assured us there were no leaks. We have had 3 more after that, one of which occurred at 3 AM, and with a 4 month old baby, that was not much fun. I have purchased a small hand held propane detector and have used that to confirm that the other alarms were just false alarms. I self-test the unit monthly, but that doesn't seem to do much good, as we still have had the problems.
UPDATE:
I contacted the Kidde customer service line (which is a pain to reach since they are only open M-F during regular business hours, so it is tough to find a time to call if you work) and talked with a representative. He told me that this alarm is their most sensitive, and things from perfume to close proximity to a cat's litter box could set off the gas alarm. However, my alarm is placed in a location where there shouldn't be any of these triggers, and the representative agreed. The company is now sending me a replacement alarm for free. Thankfully they stand behind their products.
Customer Review: Flase alarms GALORE !!! Summary: 2 Stars
I have 5 various detectors throughout my home (3 are Kidde smoke/CO type & 2 Kidde CO/Gas models) each located on different levels and areas - Over the past couple of years this particular model has struck fear within my home numerous times with what appears to be 'false' alarms. A few times the LCD would display a unacceptable level of CO, but I have another smoke/CO detector just a few feet away that would remain silent! - But most of the false alarms have displayed a flashing 'GAS' signal, even though I could not smell any sign of a gas leak. I've called the local Gas company to check things out and they agreed that I didn't have any problem. - I've written to Kidde twice about this issue & they have not yet repied to me (3 mos) - Since I own two of these models and both have set off what sure appears to be false alarms, I feel that they might not be reliable enough in a TRUE time of need. For the time being, I've disconnected both of them. Maybe they work TOO good, but I'm going to look in to another brand. Maybe there's not really a dependable one out there . . . a little frustrating!
Customer Review: Flawed Design - Eats Batteries Summary: 1 Stars
Product has potential, but has a serious design flaw that makes it a battery eater. When you lose commercial power, the battery backup takes over as it should. The problem is that when power returns, the unit will continue to run off of the battery until you manually "reset" it. Even worse, there's NO INDICATOR to show you its running off of battery power, so you never know that it needs to be reset. Only when you start getting the "LO BATT" indicator do you realize its been sitting there on battery power for who knows how long. By then, its too late and all you can do is feed it another battery. Finally got tired of wasting batteries so I no longer use the device. Stay away.
