Tools and Hardware Reviews of Kidde KN-COPP-3 Nighthawk Plug-In Carbon Monoxide Alarm with Battery Backup and Digital DisplayCustomer Review: Battery Problem Summary: 1 Stars
This product is a joke, the unit I have drains a new battery in a few hours, and it starts beeping during the night, asking for a new battery. The beep is so loud ...
Removed the battery? sorry, no battery is not an option, it will beep if there is no battery.
What can you do?
Please don't waste your money or energy on a product like this.
Customer Review: Battery Questions Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this gadget thinking I could leave out the battery altogether. But, apparently, you have to put a battery in or you get only a "Lb" (low battery) indication on the display - which is not all that informative when you know you purposely left it out.
But, it does seem to work as advertised - it always reads "O" though, either my gas powered appliances are clean burning or else it doesn't work at all. Is there a way to test it other than the self test button??
Review addendum: This thing draws a lot of current (60 milliamps). If it goes into backup mode for only a few hours for whatever reason, the battery will deplete. Maybe this is one reason for so many battery complaints.
Customer Review: Battery backup malfunctions, poor customer service from Kidde Summary: 1 Stars
We purchased 3 of these units - one for each level of our home. They all worked fine for about 6 months, then we began having trouble with all of them. The problems I'm going to describe started with one, but all 3 did the same thing within the first year.
As other reviews have mentioned, when the required 9V battery is drained below whatever level is required, the unit starts beeping loudly until you remove or replace the battery. This inevitably happens in the middle of the night, waking the whole family, and at first causing us to think there was a carbon monoxide concern. There is no distinction between a "low battery" beep and a "you have a carbon monoxide problem" beep. I understand that a low battery is going to happen from time to time, but what began happening with our units is that the "low battery" beep would happen within a week, several days, or even several HOURS after replacing it. It was really ridiculous, and extremely annoying. Gradually we stopped using all of them because of this problem and eventually purchased another brand.
Another issue is Kidde's customer service response. I called their customer service phone # to report these problems, and the person I spoke to insisted that I either was using old batteries, or that our units were not plugged into the wall far enough, thereby causing the units to use the batteries instead of the electrical outlet. Despite my assurances that the batteries were new with an long expiration date, and that we did in fact have them plugged in properly, she simply could not consider that it might be a problem with the unit. There were no offers to replace the units or help in any way.
So in summary, the battery problems with this product make it a poor choice. We're going with another brand entirely!
Customer Review: Battery problem solved Summary: 5 Stars
I also had a problem with my two detectors using up the batteries in one to two months time. But I called Kidde customer service and after I gave them the model no and assembly dates from the back of the units, they confirmed that these models were defective. Apparently there is a faulty circuit that triggers the low battery indicator prematurely. So the batteries are actually not worn down completely. The problem is with the sensor that reads the battery levels. Kidde sent me two new detectors. They are working fine so far. I will know more after a couple months. If you have this problem, call Kidde customer service and they should take care of you.
Customer Review: Beeps when power out and on battery backup Summary: 1 Stars
I can't say whether it's good at sensing CO, but this thing beeps when it is using backup battery (even with a fresh battery). Power goes out? This will beep all night. After the third power outage and removing the battery a few Summers ago, we just never plugged it back in. Also, it's big and heavy and requires a tight wall outlet to keep it from falling out and on the floor.
