Tools and Hardware Reviews of Lasko 5812 Automatic Air-Flow Heater with Temperature-Regulation SystemCustomer Review: 5 Star space heater, but... Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this at the end of the summer when it was on sale.
I wanted a heater that wouldn't turn off when it thought my bedroom was warm enough. I had also seen this heater featured in a news piece on TV last winter.
Unfortunately it does not heat my room very well. I have another fan forced heater that moves the temperature up faster and keeps it there. But if you want a heater that you can place next to you to warm you up, this heater is 5 stars. I am using it now in my livingroom for TV viewing. I don't think it is any louder than any other fan forced heater, and I actually like the white noise. For quiet heating you have to use an oil-filled radiator.
Customer Review: Awesome little heater Summary: 4 Stars
Bought this little heater after reading the reviews on it saying how well it performed. They were absolutely true. This heater pumps out amazing amounts of heat and can keep multiple small rooms very comfortable. Over the course of one winter i was able to cut my gas bill by nearly 40%, no lie! The thermostat on it is rather crude and doesnt have a temp readout but this is a minor drawback considering the heat and the savings. The blower is very strong and blows the heat at floor level allowing the heat to rise. I would highly recommend this unit
Customer Review: Best In Small Class Summary: 5 Stars
I replaced a two year old Honeywell space heater that cost the same price two years ago. The bearings on the bladed fan motor were shot and it became noiser than a 5 year old high on Christmas candy.
The unit will heat the open space of my office which is normally at 65 degrees (or less), which is about 500 cubic feet in about 3 to 5 minutes and keeps it warm with its thermostatic control. The fan must be a squirrel cage type as it puts out a lot of air and is whisper quiet. The cabinet is always cool to the touch.
For the price this unit cannot be beat for heating a small room or open space.
Customer Review: Decent Space Heater Summary: 4 Stars
This is a very good space heater for the price. I live alone in a small apartment, so I'm able to have the heater fairly close to me all the time. I'm not sure how it would fair for a larger family in a larger space as a central heater. I've only had it for about 2 weeks, so I can't comment on how much I'm saving right now; I can say that I have turned my thermostat all the way down to 64 degrees and just use the space heater...so the savings should be fairly noticeable. I would have to say that a few days ago I went to turn on the space heater and it wouldn't turn on; I thought it was broken for a minute. I then noticed the reset instructions on the back. Once I turned off the heater and unplugged it for a few hours it started working just fine.
Overall I'd say this is a great heater for a small apartment...
Customer Review: Does the job Summary: 4 Stars
I've had these running now for a couple of weeks. I use the heater for when I'm home to heat the living room which is 25x15 with entries to kitchen and dinning room at each end. But I put one of these at each end of the room and even with temps dropping into the single digits, they are able to keep the living area above 70 in a drafty environment. My doors leak air like crazy and I'm using these heaters to offset the furnace. I'm probably going to save enough money in reduced gas cost to pay for both of these in a single month. So far they are running well. Lasko, since the recall, has added a more robust three pronged power plug that barely gets warm after running for a few hours. Which is good news for those of you who had issues with the plugs getting hot or even melting.
I tested these units in the basement and within an hour they had almost the entire basement toasty warm. If you have a well insulated and sealed home, these will definitely get the job done. They draw in air from the top and discharge from the bottom so some heat is lost into the flooring or carpet, though I kind of enjoy that feeling of a warm floor on my socked feet.
This unit uses a fan and with two running can be a bit noisy for some. I don't mind it so much, just becomes background noise after a few minutes. I'm sure the fan is the weakest link in the units. I don't know if they used a robust fan or not and I don't know if the fan is replaceable, but if it does go out I'll be finding that out first hand.
This heater isn't meant to be used with nobody home, it has a generic temp sensor in it, but the heat setting is by the large dial on the front and no actual temp settings. The button under the dial is the power switch which lights up when the unit is on. Only one fan setting on or off. Simple but effective, if you want a timer or temp setting, then you'll have to drop some more coin for something a bit more advanced.
These did have a plastic smell when I first started using them, but that went away after a a few days of use. No detectable smell at all now. I assume that smell came from the plastic fan in the unit or the plastic vent duct... everything else on the outside is metal.
