Tools and Hardware Reviews of Leatherman 830039 New Wave Multitool with Leather/Nylon Combination Sheath

Customer Review: 2nd generation of leatherman users
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the fourth leatherman in our household - all different owners. My husband uses his almost daily. My son is studying engineering in college so we got him one - again, he finds almost daily uses for it. This particular purchase was for my 16 year old son as my husband feels no one should be without one. The Leatherman appears to be the best of all the choices out there. The tools are sturdy and well made. If they do happen to break, Leatherman replaces the entire unit for free (25 yr warranty). We highly recommend this tool.

Customer Review: A Good Buy

Overall I'm quite pleased, although there are some minor problems such as the wire cutters not locking into position. They sometimes get stuck and need to be forced open. The scissors are also not the greatest, so if you're going to use this tool a lot, I suggest buying the Surge which has larger scissors with a spring. Both knife blades, although not razor sharp, are nice sized and flip open very easily. However, if you plan on sharpening the blades be careful-they nick easily. All of the other tools work well except for the old- fashioned can opener. The sheath serves its purpose, although it's not the greatest quality. In short, if you're looking for a mid-priced multi-tool this is a good buy.

I originally was going to purchase this product through a major department store; Leatherman and shealth came separate. Once I was ready to complete the order the Leatherman was out of stock. I came to Amazon and found the Leatherman and shealth could be purchased together. It was about 25% cheaper too. My husband is very happy with the Leatherman product. He was skeptical on the quality of the leather shealth but it has lived up to his expectations.

Customer Review: A Serious, Intelligently-Engineered Tool
Summary: 5 Stars

I have had two other Leathermans (Leathermen?) prior to this one, and I think this tool exhibits a level of design and engineering that surpasses them. I had an original Leatherman PST and a Juice S2. The original was competently done but was not as refined as the New Wave. The Juice S2 was an almost perfect compromise between size and features, but it always annoyed me that the two halves were asymetrical. I gave the PST to my father-in-law, and the T.S.A. took my Juice, which prompted me to get the New Wave.

I haven't had to do any big jobs with the Wave, but I use it at least once a day for something. What I like best about it is the sophistication of the design and the quality of the construction, and the little touches that make it so satisfying to use.

For example, I love the one-handed opening knife blades. (The only shortcoming I can see is that they are designed for right-handers only.) The way they integrated them into a tool like this is genius. When I first got it I liked them a lot, but was a bit frustrated because I never knew which blade I was opening, the serrated or the drop-point. Then one day I noticed that the back of the serrated blade was notched, and the back of the drop-point blade was smooth. There it was, a solution to my problem already designed into the tool. The little touches like that make me very satisfied with my New Wave.

Customer Review: A good tool

A good well made product. I had owned a previous version of this product. Being able to lock all the tools and not just the blades is an improvement. I find is is fairly easy to pinch fingers between the handles. The tool is fairly bulky and heavy. But I guess that just proves that you can't have everything at once. It takes size and weight to get the strength and utility this tool offers. Overall, I would recommend this tool.
