Tools and Hardware Reviews of Leatherman 830160 Surge Pocket Multitool with Nylon/Leather Sheath

Customer Review: Awesome!
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this item to replace my WAVE which was misplaced. As a homeowner I am lost without this on the weekends, it is always handy for making quick repairs without fumbling through my toolbox for pliers, knife, screwdriver, etc. This along with the driver set is only needing a hammer to make it a complete toolbox on your belt. I recommend this tool for everyone.

Customer Review: Big. Heavy. Great.
Summary: 5 Stars

I received a "Surge" about a year ago as a gift. I would never have paid so much for a knife or a multi-tool, but I was pleased to receive it. However, I didn't see it getting much use, other than sitting in my junk drawer.

I was wrong.

Since the day I got it, few times have I gone anywhere without it in my pocket. And trust me, it's the days you forget this tool that you realize how useful it is.

Let's be honest: The "Surge" is one of the biggest (if not the biggest) multi-tools that Leatherman produces. It is big and it is heavy. But that means it is well-built. Extremely well built. Mine has taken everything from a second-story fall onto concrete to an (unintentional) dip in the lake and it has come away without a scratch or trace of rust. And I am not gentle on this thing: I do not go out of my way to sheath it, keep it dry, or try not to drop it (which I do quite frequently, as I am incredibly clumsy). It still looks as good as the day I got it. In fact, the blades are still razor-sharp, despite never sharpening them yet.

My one complaint, if you can call it that, would be that when the tool is folded, it still has some sharp edges around the body that tend to wear out the pockets of the pants one is wearing. But keep in mind, I do not keep mine in the (very nice) leather sheath provided, I just throw it into my jeans pocket in the morning. This is really not a knife that is meant to be carried that way, but aside from a little wear and tear on my work pants, I have no complaints.

I would never have bought this Leatherman on my own, but I feel lucky to have gotten one as a gift. And I know that if anything ever happened to this one, I would not hesitate to rush out and buy a replacement.

Top quality product all the way.

Customer Review: Can't live without it

As a sailboat owner this product is indespensible. My only reservation is the saw OR the file can be part of the unit.

Customer Review: Chistmas gift
Summary: 4 Stars

I can't write a review on how awesome this is yet because it's a gift for my husband. What I can write about is how fast this was delivered. I am always extra satisfied when what I order is shipped out and arrives as promised. I'm certain the leatherman will be a huge hit.

Customer Review: Durable, dependable, and bigger than other multi tools.

I did a side by side comparison of Letherman's surge and the Letherman Wave on their web site. I found that one of them has an extra tool (if memory serves me correctly the surge has one more function than the wave). Given the hype given to the wave due to notable survival expert Les Stroud's (I do like his show) use of it I did a side by side comparison at my local store as well. This is my opinion of the two.

The Wave is much lighter from my limited experience, and if I was in the back woods by myself The Wave would get my vote. However, I do a lot of work around my quarter acre wanna be farm (I grew up with 60 acres and can't beat the country out of me). This in my opinion is where the surge really earns it's money. I beat the daylights out of this thing and it keeps coming back for more. I don't own the wave, nor have I tried it in a small home agricultural setting. However, having looked at both I just don't see the wave performing the farming use I need from it. Now if I was going to be in the back woods in a survival situation where every ounce of weight counts I would opt for the wave.

The Surge is the biggest multi tool I own (and I own quite a few), and where I agree in part with the reviewers who state "it's not that heavy." I must clarify that with, it's not that heavy unless your going to be wearing it for a long time with limited resources. If I were really tired, and found myself exhausted from a hike just to discover I'm now lost in the woods I wouldn't want the surge with me. It would be better than nothing, but a lighter multi tool would probably be better when every inch of space and weight counts.

Disclaimer: I don't go out into the woods, and I'm not a survival expert. I'm just using my own common sense and product knowledge to write this review. Ultimately you have to decide what is best for you. At the end of the day does it really matter what works for me? Take my review and others and apply it to your own situation. Gerber also makes some great multi tools.
