Tools and Hardware Reviews of Leatherman 830160 Surge Pocket Multitool with Nylon/Leather SheathCustomer Review: Great utility tool Summary: 5 Stars
Very happy for purchasing this useful tool although it is a little bit heavy but the knife it has is very sharp and great
Customer Review: Great, but one caveat... Summary: 4 Stars
Leatherman does not disappoint! This is a fantastic multitool. The only reason I am giving this less than five stars: This is no pocket knife. It's much too large and heavy to be considered a pocket tool. This is a tool. It's a great tool. It's good at everything it does. It's made of top quality materials and is very solidly constructed. Most importantly, all the blades lock nice and tight. When doing carpentry and other maintenance I will keep it right on my hip. However, for everyday carry, it's just too big. I will stick to my Leatherman 830846 Skeletool Multitool for that. That being said, I would recommend this item to anyone who needs a serious multitool - or even as a substitute for a small apartment tool kit.
Customer Review: Heavy Duty (Did I mention heavy?) Summary: 4 Stars
I bought one from one of Amazon's partners and the tool arrived in it's sealed clamshell package in used condition. The tool was scratched, dirty and the scissors were loose as well as the knife looked used. I returned it to the company I bought it from and they sent me a refund. I sent an email to Leatherman about my experience and they sent a reply stating that this was a unique experience and that they would check with their quality control dept to see if there is a problem.
I purchased another Surge from Amazon directly and the tool arrived in the clamshell sealed in its packaging. I opened it up to find that the tool was in acceptable condition except for the fingerprints and what looked like cleaning compound still on the blades and handles (just like the one I bought and returned earlier). The scissors were a bit loose also, but not as much as the first (Sounds like Leatherman has some quality issues).
I have had the tool for about a month and I have no other real issues to talk about, it performs well and handles most jobs it was designed for. The tool is solid, well engineered and dependable. The tool feels great in the hand and is easy to open with one hand if needed. The tool is big and on the heavy side (If you are going to wear this tool on your belt, you will always know it's there). A little quirk in the tool is a rattle when it is closed, this does not happen every time it's in the closed position, just sometimes.
Except for the cosmetic issues I mentioned earlier, this is a good product. I plan to keep this with me for quite a while and I do not doubt that it will perform as it should without fail. I keep it with me in the shop, studio, backyard, garage, and when hiking. Great tool, did I mention it was heavy?
Customer Review: Heavy Duty Legitimacy...Weight is worth functions Summary: 5 Stars
This Leatherman tool is admittedly a hefty item. But let's be honest, that means it's a tool that isn't going to let you down. Can you get this many different functions in such a small package? Probably not. This is nothing like what similar Coleman camping products offer. I got the 42-bit accessory set as well as this multitool. After a few days, you don't really feel it when your actually working. Tons of different implements that cut: wire stripper, serrated and clip point knife blades, two wire cutting spots on it, screwdrivers (flat and phillips) and of course the needlenose. The blades came razor sharp from the factory. I also like the strong spring on the scissors. It snaps the blades back out instantly after release.
The interchangeable file and saw blade combination was an interesting touch to add even more versatility, but this seemed a bit lost on me. I don't think I'm going to file any tool with the insert I got (NOTE: I have the file, but I think it came from the 42-bit ACCESSORY KIT). The interchanging ability is more of a hassle than it's worth. Also, the file/saw felt wobbly and weak in the setup.
I like to be prepared at work and I find everything down to the eyeglass repair screwdriver useful in one way or another. Rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. However, I am able to state the former for the uses outnumbering the drawbacks of weight, which seems to be the main complaint of people who have this.
My leatherman arrived pristine with a leather case that had stretchy cloth material for the sides. A bit of a letdown the sheath was not leather all around. Well worth the money for functionality though.
Customer Review: I must be freakishly large Summary: 5 Stars
I recently gave my daughter my Leatherman "Supertool" when she moved away to start a new job, telling her that it had most tools she would need. Then I saw a gift set display with the "SURGE" with a very nice Leatherman knife that has two screwdrivers and a set of bits to use in the interchangeable screwdriver... I couldn't resist, and have been very pleased with the whole set... with the small exception that the leather case rides too high on the belt, I switched to a nylon case I had which works fine but doesn't hold the extra bits. That being said I like the "huge size" of this tool,it really is big, (compared to other multi-tools) but I need to use tools all day every day, so it might be a lot to carry if that was not the case. I still carry the blunt nose Gerber always as it can turn a bolt when needed, and is easier to use one handed than any Leatherman tool, but this tool the SURGE, can do more things well than any of the other multi tools out there.
