Although it's definitely a Leatherman product, it doesn't feel like a top quality product the old Leathermans felt.
Seems to be much heavier then before with cheaper finish, probably is made in China and not in the US as it used to be.
Pity, another product is on its way down the drain.

I have had a bunch of multi-tools and this one is, I think the best so far. It`s sturdy and well designed and the leather sheath will fit a Mag Lite Solitare in the side. Nifty. Some people are complaining that the Surge is too big and too heavy. To quote Mr. Miyagi " What are you, some kind of girl or something?" If this is too much for you to handle, start wearing some lacy undergarments you sissy. It`s a tool, it`s supposed to have some heft to it. You not using it to perform surgery. Would you prefer that it was cheap and flimsy? I think Leatherman did a pretty good job with this. So there. Put down the purse honey and get a Leatherman Surge. I fear that I am addicted to the Leatherman line of tools. Each time a new model comes out, I seem to pick one up. This being my latest addition. I wanted an improvement to my original "Super" tool and I got just that with the "Surge". I have large hands so this tool feels great in my hand and along with the extension pack of driver bits, it gives me great versitility for any emergency repair, excluding micro repairs. It is large, but it gets the job done, I am rarely on a job without some form of leatherman tool with me. I own and have used three other manufacture's knock-off copies of leatherman-like tools and have found them lacking in usefulness. At the moment I have my eye on a new model "wave" to replace my old style "wave" that I carry in my suits, but then that is another review.Customer Review: Leatherman Wave on Steroids

I feel the need to address the reviewer who called the Surge Junk. I'm not sure what kind of tool he was using, but it was not a Leatherman. I've upgraded my way through 4 Leatherman tools (the PST, the Wave, The Wave II, and now the Surge.) I have never had one rust, at all. The surge is 100% stainless steel, and would have to be abused BADLY!! to rust.
All that being said the Surge is now my multi-tool of choice (which is saying a lot since it replaced the Wave II.) With needlenose pliers, 2 knife blades, scissors, file and saw that can be swapped, awl, bottle opener, flat screwdiver, and a bit driver that can be used with a multitude of bits this tool will get you out of any situation you may find yourself in.
I wholeheartedly recommend this tool to anyone who is in the market for a multi-tool. If the Surge's size is a bit much for your tastes go for the Wave which is another 5-star Leatherman product which is just as useful and weighs 4oz. less.

This is my first Leatherman tool, I had always bought the cheaper brands before hand, thinking a multi-tool is a multi-tool, but this Leatherman has changed my mind. It is definately the multi-tool to which all others should be compared to. Everything is easily accessed, and is made to last a lifetime, I can even buy add ons such as extra bits for the screwdriver. I definately recommend Leatherman multi-tools, you can't go wrong.
