Customer Review: Heating power reduces over months of use

I haven't been able to figure out why this heater will not output full power after roughly 6 months of use. When plugged in, it turns on with full output for about 15 seconds and proceeds to go into a low power output mode. It doesn't heat up water to boil at that point and it becomes rather useless. There is also some discolouration that takes place around the 2 metal probes that are joined together by a solder. I assume that one of them reads the temperature of the water to determine if it is in a safe level of operation. I tried cleaning the entire thing and it didn't work even though I only use it in tap water.
Nevertheless, I don't really like this unit even if it worked because it requires you to have a rather large depth of water to cover the whole heating element. If you know that you're going to be heating some deep water, you're probably fine. The shroud that covers the heating element is nice, however I wish it was more easier to remove so that it makes the element easier to clean.
In the end, I bought the electra heater to replace this as it has a better design since it heats from the bottom and you don't need as much water to begin to use it.

This is a great product! I am a tile installer, and I use it in the winter to keep my wet saw de-iced, and get my wash water up to a temp. that will not induce hypothermia. I would be lost without this thing, and without amazon! (My local retailer, who shall remain nameless, charges about $80 for this thing. A got it on amazon for less than half of that.) This would be a great present for anyone who works outside with water. (Tile installers, brick layers, masons, etc.)Customer Review: No Satisfied

I run my car on waste vegetable oil, and I use this to heat buckets of oil (hot oil is a lot easier to filter.) I've never had any problems. It heats 5 gallons of oil pretty quickly, and I'll be happy as long as it keeps working.
