The pins & tails template set is just that, a template set, not a ready to go out of the box jig. You need to do some building of mount blocks and some adjustment before the first dovetails can be cut, but once you are cutting the dovetails, you get lined up for nice, tight, clean dovetails. This is a great way to get into doing dovetails, particularly if you like regular spaced dovetails and not the alternating spaced ones I have seen some other folks do with Omnijigs and similar... For my uses, this is a great setup...
I rated it as a 5 due to the mounting block that you need to build and configure, Aside from that issue, once mounted to the mounting block, these take up a good chunk of storage space... Finding a place to store them can be a pain...
I have purchased quite a bit from MLCS so far, and have needed to ask them questions about their products and using them. If you want to know what customer service is supposed to be like, give MLCS a call with a question about their products. I don't think there is another company out there that can beat them!
Description of MLCS Pins and Tails Through Dovetail Templates BOTH Small and Large with 1/4" Shank Bits
An easy to use, inexpensive tool for making classic through dovetails, a joint that is the hallmark of fine craftsmanship. Made of sturdy cast aluminum. Small 15" long template cuts 3/4" wide tails that are 1-1/8" on center. Large 16" long template cuts 1" wide tails, 2" on center. After a one time initial setup, simply clamp the jig in place on each board, and rout the pins and tails. There is no limit to the length of board you can dovetail, and by shifting the jig, you can create variable spaced or extra wide dovetails. The FREE 5/8" Router Guide Bushing works with any router that has a router baseplate with a 1-3/16" center hole. For other size center holes, see MLCS #9096 Universal Router Template Guide Kit.
