This is an excellent idea for a door chain. It is a standard door chain, but with a cool twist, the part which is visible and reachable from the outside, has a key hole set in the top of it, which can be unlocked/locked from outside -- releasing/securing the chain in the process.
This effectively adds a second deadbolt to your door, without having to go through all of the hassle that is usually required by rented/leased properties, for adding new locks to doors. The door chain wouldn't stop a determined intruder, a good couple of kicks to the door with just the chain in place, by a person weighing at least 180 lbs or so, should be able to either snap the chain, or pull one of the sides out of a wooden door frame. But, no door chain is really built to withstand too much force, they are just for an additional layer of security.
