Tools and Hardware Reviews of Master Lock 4605D 3-Foot Retractable Cable Lock (colors may vary)

Customer Review: Broken Lock
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this for an international trip, but never was able to try it because lock was broken even before I took it out of package. Do yourself a favor do not buy this product.

Customer Review: Cable lock
Summary: 4 Stars

This lock is not designed for rugged use. The plastic case could be smashed easily BUT it is exactly what we were looking for. We needed a combination lock with a short cable to lock side by side refrigerator doors and it works perfectly in that application.

Customer Review: Cancer risk?
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this lock to use for our baby's stroller. On the back of the package, I noticed a small sticker that states "Warning: This product contains one or more chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. Wash hands after handling." I already opened the package before I saw this. I'm sure it's a fine lock, but I'm afraid to touch it. I'm pretty disappointed that I can't use it. I will try to find someone who wants it for free who doesn't mind the chemicals.

Customer Review: Causes cancer.
Summary: 1 Stars

A tiny sticker on the back reads: "WARNING: This product contains one or more chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. Wash hands after handling."

The thing is, they don't tell you which ones. This lock is going to the dumpster.

Customer Review: Cheaply Made - Don't Bother
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased one of these at a local hardware store. As soon as I got back to my car, I opened the package to check it out, and was surprised to see how much of the lock is made of plastic. Not just the outer housing, but the mechanism to retract the cable and the part that actually holds the metal cable end are both plastic. By the looks of it, a good hard yank would break it and tear the "locked" cable right out. A hammer and/or screwdriver would definitely finish it off with little fuss. I didn't bother to test that though, because one of the plastic bits was already broken and moving around inside. I immediately went in and exchanged it for a second one in the store, and when I opened it: same problem. There was a broken plastic piece inside the thing, and it was even less functional than the first one. The "retract" button on the side of this one was jammed shut, and the cable would pull out, but not retract. Two in a row with broken internal parts before they even came out of the package was enough for me - I returned it and will look elsewhere for a lock that isn't mostly plastic.

I'm surprised Master Lock puts their name on this piece of junk; I don't know how they can market something as a security device when it's mostly plastic and so low quality that internal pieces are breaking on its way to the store.
