Tools and Hardware Reviews of Master Lock 5401D Select Access Wall-Mounted Key Storage Box with Set-Your-Own Combination LockCustomer Review: 4 years and going strong Summary: 5 Stars
Bought this at lowes about 4 years ago. It has since been moved several times as I move often. It has been in and out of the weather for long durations. Not all my places had a porch so it def. go some wear. However, it still functions like it did when I bought it new. Solid construction. You would need a sledge hammer to get this thing off the wall/open. My only problem is the lever to open it is a bit short and can take some pressure to get it open. Other than that, I love it and would recommend it to someone who needed one (Really I think everyone should have one).
Customer Review: A PLEASANT SURPRISE Summary: 5 Stars
MASTERLOCK 5401D
PROS;
-ONE HAND OPERATION
-STRONGER THAN I EXPECTED.
-EASIER TO USE THAN I EXPECTED.
-VERY EASY TO INSTALL.
-EASY TO RESET YOUR PASSCODE ANYTIME YOU WANT.
-IMPENETRABLE (REALLY!!! YOU'D NEED A CROWBAR AND DYNAMITE).
-INEXPENSIVE.
-BETTER DESIGN THAN THE OTHER KEY SAFES WHOSE ENTIRE FRONT COMES OFF. THIS DESIGN IS HINGED AT BOTTOM AND OPENS SIMILAR TO A STORAGE BIN.
-NEAT SLIDING COVER THAT HIDES THE COMBO WHEELS (UNSEEN IN THE ADS). IT CAN ALSO SCRAMBLE THE CODE WHEN YOU CLOSE IT, IF YOU PUSH ON IT.
-HOLD 4-6 KEYS.
2 CONs;
-DIFFICULT TO SEE DIGITS IN THE DARK. (TIP... INSTALL IT AT EYE LEVEL)
-IT CAN BE DIFFICULT TO CRAM SEVERAL KEYS IN AND CLOSE
This is a no brainer. It is hands down the best bang for the buck in exterior key safes. I read the reviews too, then went with this one, Glad I did. YOU WILL BE TOO.
Customer Review: Added security Summary: 5 Stars
We needed a secure way to store spare and emergency keys. Hiding under a mat or in one of those phony rocks did not seem like a good idea. This product solved the problem. I mounted it in an obscure, out of sight location so it can not be seen by casual observation. It is strong enough to withstand any abuse a would be thief can give it. I would recommend this product to anyone who needs to store keys in a secure location.
Customer Review: Almost great keysafe Summary: 3 Stars
Easy to mount and works fine, but...
A)in our lighting situation (overhead institutional flourescents) the numbers on the combination wheels are hard to read, especially because some numbers are shaped a little odd (2 almost looks like 7). Would be easier to read if the numbers were white on black background instead of black on a silver background.
B) the combo wheels are stiff to turn and the opener-latch is also stiff, and ladies can break fingernails on them. We fixed this problem by attaching a little stick on a string to the keysafe so that the stick is used to turn the wheels and to push the opener-latch in order to save fingernails.
Customer Review: Almost perfect, definintely better than the GE/Supra Summary: 4 Stars
Pro's: Ease of installation, roomy interior, styling, slide-up cover for the combination dial, number of possible combinations, ease of setting combination, less expensive than GE/Supra.
Con's: (All minor) No hook or clip to hold keys, dial numbers are hard to see in dark, maybe too easy to reset combo.
Unknown's: Durability in exposed area over time.
I purchased two of these for a sports facility to replace GE/Supras which had quit working (and had to break in to them - not easy, but doable).
They are far roomier, better looking and have many more effective combinations than the GE (the GE allows any sequence of numbers: 1-2-3-4 = 4-3-2-1 = 3-2-1-4, etc). I hope the dial mechanism plus the cover on the Master Lock will prevent that problem, and comparing the cases, I don't know how I'll break into these if I have to!
The con's are minor - with no hook, the keys fall to the bottom. I have 5 keys on one (could fit more), and it is sometimes difficult to close the latch (I was hard-pressed to even put 5 keys on the GE). If the dials had the numbers painted in black, it would be easier to see them in poorer lighting (similar for the GE if you don't have the button positions memorized). The setting process is almost too easy - someone could try to be clever and could easily reset the box (same for the GE).
I'll deal with the con's, and will have to wait to see the durability, but so far, I am very happy with the switch to the Master Lock product.
