Tools and Hardware Reviews of Master Lock 5401D Select Access Wall-Mounted Key Storage Box with Set-Your-Own Combination Lock

Customer Review: Combo key lockbox
Summary: 5 Stars

Throw away the mounting screws they send with this lock box. I used some 3" wood screws, and now I know it will stay where I left it.
Put the combo at eye level, and you will have no problems. A little hard to work one handed, but all in all a very nice way to keep yourself from being locked out of your house. I left one of the mounting screws (I used 4) a little loose, and hooked my keys on a ring so they can dangle on that screw head. Otherwise you have a hard time getting more than a couple of keys to fit to make closing this thing easy. I have 4 keys in there now with no problem.

Customer Review: Complete piece of S#!%

I never bother to write a review, but I have to this time....

Every caretaker who has to get into my Father's house to check on him HATES this box. I am suddenly unpopular because of the shoddy construction of this thing....To Whit:

This lockbox is very difficult to open....a thin shim must be used to pry it open. (There is nothing to pull on).
The numbers are very stiff, particularly in cold weather, so it is hard to get the combination lined up to begin with.

Summary: Don't even think about it.

Customer Review: DO NOT BUY
Summary: 1 Stars

The dials are rough to turn, don't seat accurately or solidly and on the very first attempt to set the combination and reopen, the box would not open.
I unfortunately bought two of them after seeing so many good reviews ... which makes me think those reviews are staged. This is a crappy little box,
do yourself a favor and look elsewhere.

Customer Review: DO NOT BUY!!!!

You will probably do the same thing that I did and ignore this review because there are so many other positive reviews. I had this stupid thing for less than a month- it was working perfectly and then today it would not open. I did not forget my combination, it is just stuck and will not open. I called customer service where I was directed to a very rude, obnoxious girl who kept asking me condescending questions like, "Well, do you have any friends that have tools?" WTF?! Umm, yes, I own tools and I know others who own tools- how do I get this thing open? Then she asked me if I would like to be sent another lock because it was probably a "manufacture defect." Idon't want another one of these stupid locks, what I would like is to be able to open this one up. She said that I should try taking it to a locksmith. I told her that they should reimburse me for having to pay for the locksmith. They would not agree to this, which I think is ridiculous. All I can say is, don't but this lock!

UPDATE: Instead of paying to take this thing to a locksmith, I decided to pull out a flathead screwdriver and a hammer and see if I could get it open. Took me about 15 minutes to open despite the fact that I am not especially stong and I really have no knowledge of opening locks. If you are in the same predicament that I was in, simply use a large flathead and hammer the top backside area out until you have a nice size hole. There is a metal lever near the top. Simply push on the metal lever and it will easily open. Don't buy this hunk of junk.

Customer Review: Does the job
Summary: 4 Stars

I've owned this key box for 6 yrs. Used it as an ouside key box for two years. Exposure to the elements caused the number dials to "stick" a little. I sprayed it with some WD40 and it was good as new. Now that I live in an apartment building I'm not allowed to mount this box outside of my unit so I have it mounted in my closet. It currently holds my spare car key.

It's sometimes difficult to get the door to close depending on what kind of key you put inside. I solved this problem by adding a small accessory hook to the inside of the box. I secured the hook with glue and have had no problems since.

Dont plan on putting an entire ring of keys in here because they will not fit.

If you are looking for a way to safely secure one or two keys this will do the job and at a good price.
