Tools and Hardware Reviews of Milwaukee 0490-22 4-Volt Lithium-Ion Screwdriver KitCustomer Review: Handy, but not much power & RPM is low even at "high" speed. Summary: 4 Stars
Good as a light-duty screwdriver, even a very light-duty drill, but not very powerful. Instructions advise you to pre-drill holes for driving screws into wood. If you don't, it may not have enough power to drive them, and the battery will drain quickly. I expected more from a Milwaukee tool.
I bought this for my workshop, but don't think I'll be using it much out there. Best for small screws or drilling small holes.
Customer Review: How did I ever get along without it? Summary: 5 Stars
First let me say I use this Milwaukee Screwdriver everyday, I am happy I chose the Milwaukee over the other brands I was looking at, it was a little more money but their reputation for quality and the higher rpm (600)sold me.
I really enjoy how compact this screwdriver is, it conveniently fits in my tool pouch so I no longer have to carry around my heavy cordless drill for simple tasks like installing lights, switches, or outlets. The easy change bit collar is also a nice touch, you do not have to keep holding back the collar it will click and stay open until you replace the bit. Sounds like a simple thing but it's the little details like this that makes an already great tool a better one.
Battery life last a long time but it's still nice that Milwaukee included two batteries and good charger with this screwdriver. Some other brands I looked at had a permanent internal battery making the screwdriver useless while it was being charged.
My only regret is I should have bought this cordless screwdriver a long time ago, it has been a real time saver. I still carry my old fashion hand screwdrivers but the first tool I usually reach for is my Milwaukee screwdriver!
Customer Review: I should have bought the milwaulkee first Summary: 5 Stars
Milwaukee equipment has always made durable products for the professional as well as the homeowner and this electric screwdriver is no exception I use it for assembly work and so far has really surprised me with its versatility compared to my last electric (yellow) screwdriver I especially like the clutch system with auto off saves battery life and I only need to change batteries 3 times in two days, The last electric (yellow) screwdriver had battery changes 3 times a day or more witch is time consuming while trying to be mobile. The last (yellow) screwdriver had more voltage but was bulkier and seemed to have less torque (i.e. I hope you other pro's know what I mean by yellow only one company with yellow signature products )
Customer Review: It has a lot of torque Summary: 4 Stars
I was impressed with the amount of torque generated by this small cordless screwdriver. Combined with the Milwaukee 48-32-1505 40-Piece Screw Driving Set it handles almost anything that can be screwed. The jointed handle is good for fitting into small spaces. The charger and spare battery are top quality. I don't have any complaints.
Customer Review: Leaves me wanting more... Summary: 3 Stars
My preference has always been Milwaukee tools so I strive to select them if they provide a tool I need.
I've had a DeWalt 7.2V cordless (DW920K-2) for several years now and it was getting pretty banged up with all the usage and both original batteries needing replacement soon, so I thought now was the time to switch to a Milwaukee cordless screwdriver. Even better was that it was Christmas time and family asked so I obliged by "wishing" for this 4V Milwaukee tool; I even conveniently sent them the Amazon link to this exact tool so there would be no mistakes.
Delighted after yanking the Xmas paper off, I proceeded to give it a quick whirl around the house. So far so good...
Until I started to really put it to use on the same types of jobs I used the DeWalt on.
And this is where I started to realize its many shortcomings:
1) Only one bit is included (cross-tip) and there is no place on the tool to store it (the DeWalt comes with both a flat and a cross-tip and there are easy to use slots on the body to store both bits)
2) There is no "oomph" at the max clutch setting. It can barely turn anything beyond just simple screws. And forget about trying to remove a rusted-in cross-tip screw (yes, I realize the description says "screwdriver," however, the DeWalt "screwdriver" at 7.4V can wrench most auto body panel bolts with no problems; I actually have to be careful not to strip anything with the higher clutch settings). The end result is that I now must maintain TWO different cordless drivers: a "lightweight" one in the form of this Milwaukee, and a "heavy duty" one (which is the DeWalt so far). But if the DeWalt can handle both finesse and brute force, why even bother lugging around the Milwaukee in my already full and heavy tool bag?
3) The rocking "thumb" switch isn't as convenient as a trigger switch with separate forward/reverse button. Of course, this is a personal preference, as perhaps it may be convenient to have one switch control both rotational direction and power, but having to press with the SIDE of my thumb on the switch (when the body is "folded") for extended or numerous times will definitely lead to a blister. And having to ride my thumb up or down on the switch to change rotation with a blister ain't going to be pretty.
4) I can't lock the body in any position, so if I'm "contorting" my hand/arm/body to get to fastener and I need the body to be "rigid' at the angle I set it at, this driver won't do it for me (the DeWalt firmly locks in the straight or folded position).
5) The battery needs to be rotated to lock in place and even so it's not a very secure lock. The battery will pop-out on those errant drops... and when you're not paying attention and forgot to rotate it into place as it can still run when not secured (the DeWalt battery securely locks when pushing it in and unlocks by pressing the two opposite buttons easily).
6) There is no included (or even separate) case (the DeWalt comes with case to hold everything, including both batteries). Yes, I know that it should be obvious that no case was included, but the DeWalt is almost half the price and comes with more accessories and more power.
On it's own, without a buyer having any other cordless screwdriver, this will probably do nicely. It's definitely a little more compact than the DeWalt 7.2V. However, having been "spoiled" at what other cordless drivers are capable of, all I can say is that I'm glad I didn't pay the buck-twenty-five for this thing (pity my brother, however).
UPDATE 2011-Feb-15:
I can now say without a doubt that the battery can easily pop-out, even when not dropped. I picked up the tool for my tool bag for job and a few moments after pressing the trigger the battery dropped out. It had been securely fastened before placing it into the tool bag as I had used it on a previous project without switching batteries.
I also dropped the drill roughly 4 feet onto a concrete garage and now the battery fuel gauge no longer works (I tried it with the "undropped" battery but still a no-go). I've dropped this drill only twice: the other time onto carpet (again, roughly 4 foot drop) but otherwise I've coddled it, so to have a component fail already doesn't bode well for it's durability.
