Tools and Hardware Reviews of Milwaukee 2401-22 12-Volt Li-Ion Compact Driver Kit

Customer Review: Despite many positive reviews my experience is negative
Summary: 2 Stars

I purchased the Milwaukee 12v compact driver in May of this year to replace a Hitachi 14.4 volt nickel-cadmium driver/drill that I completely used every day until the batteries gave out. That lasted about a year and a half. Expected, of course, for nickel-cadmium batteries. The Milwaukee 12v compact driver failed to ever drive 130 three inch screws into a 2x4. I believe that these claims are based on pre-drilled holes drilled into the 1.5 inch side of the 2x4. This is absolutely not a real world situation. Why in the world would anyone ever do this? Yes, the driver will drive a three inch screw into very soft wood. I only achieve about 30-40 before a recharge is needed. Yet this is claimed by Milwaukee to be around 130 three inch screws. I have seen advertisements state 100lbs-150lbs of torque. Which one is it anyway? It could be most likely 100 or less. About 30-40% of the time this tool fails to drive a three inch screw through two 2x4's. In fact, this evening, it failed to drive a two inch decking screw through 2x2 treated pine. I have absolute proof. The Milwaukee 12v compact driver bogs down and simply quits. Maybe it's good for assembling IKEA furniture with tiny screws.

I have found that this driver is really good for driving two inch screws or less. It is not a heavy duty driver! No matter what the claims and reviews! Most reviews are made by homeowners hanging pictures! Hang mini blinds with it! About a month ago I purchased the lesser known Hitachi DS10DFL drill/driver and constantly compare the two. Despite the heavily marketed Milwaukee, the Hitachi DS10DFL has out performed the Milwaukee 2401-20 driver consistently! Driving the same screw into the same testing area, the Hitachi completed the task with some compliant but didn't give up like the Milwaukee did! Come on people, really test these new drills and drivers! Sure, this driver is great for first timers, but not for ones who use them on a daily basis.

Customer Review: Disappointed in the M12
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought this m12 driver in a combo set with the m12 drill and a milwaukee bag at the big orange box store just before xmas. My intentions were to use this in the construction of cabinets and furniture, I thought the smaller size would be a good asset in tight spots. My frustrations with this set are many, first of all the Li-Ion batteries that come with this set charge fast but drain very quick, I cant drive many Kreg 1 1/4 inch screws before being recharged. Second drilling pocket holes in pine seems like it takes every bit of power these things has. The drill is much better than the driver with the exception that after 2 or three screws or pocket holes the bit will loosen up to the point where it will just fall out of the unit. If you must buy an M12 take the drill over the driver, but in my opinion the best part of my purchase was the nice red bag.

Customer Review: Does it all - in a neat little package !
Summary: 5 Stars

Being a hands on Interior Designer for over 35 years and have an arsenal of tools, I can attest to the fact that this is a great drill / driver for a great price.

I already have a larger milwaukee plug in drill / hammer drill and a bosch 18volt drill and was not sure that this tool would be used that much. I was wrong. I use it all the time due to its light weight and unreal strenght to drive screws etc with its clutch drive. You should be aware that the drill has a female clutch drive that accepts square bits not round. Therefore all drill bits etc that have round ends will not be able to be inserted unless you pick up a Jacobs or similar adapter. I picked one up on amazon for this tool by Milwaukee for less than $20. Now all items can be used on the drill.
Surprisingly strong I would have thought an optional handle (off the main body) might be a nice feature as I found the drill actually turned my hand - it's that strong. Battery is long lasting and the soft zippered carring case allows room for extra items. PERFECT.... I now take the little case everywhere, with driving bits (extra) and drill bits (extra) and the adaptive chuch (extra), I am a happy camper ! NO MORE ACKING ARMS LIFTING AN 18 V DRILL OVER MY HEAD FOR HOURS !!!

Customer Review: Durability problems?
Summary: 3 Stars

I saw a promo poster in one of the hardware stores I frequent and was very interested in this tool. When I asked about it, the manager told me that as a high-volume Milwaukee dealer they had received one of the first batches to be released, and had already sent them all back because the units kept breaking. Can't remember what part it was but it was one piece consistently. The stats on the driver sound good but if it doesn't last then stats aren't good for much, so I'm curious. Has anyone had one break during use?

Customer Review: Excellant driver
Summary: 5 Stars

Compact but powerful. Good battery life, helpful led to see work area and easy to use and secure chuck. Clutch performs well and back of housing is flat to apply extra pressure against fastener being driven. Handle could be narrower, but you quickly get used to this. Battery release is a bit crude and hard to operate out of handle and does not smoothly go into charger. Its a more accurately a 4.5 but the best out there and the price is reasoanble. Performs very well and would buy again.
