My Mini Digital Sound Level Meter is my new favorite toy. At such a low price point for a technical gadget like this, its quality of construction and easily understood contrals are impressive. Its light weight (under five ounces) and size (under six inches) make it ergonomic and easy to handle.
The readings are clearly easy to read on the generously sized screen. The readings may be a couple decimals off, but I certainly don't need cutting edge accuracy to measure the noise levels of my vacuum cleaners or outdoor power equipment. Yesterday I even measured the loudness of my grandson's barking. (He's an Australian cattle dog and almost reached 80 decibels.)
Why would you want to buy one of these?

The fun quotient. Play a rousing game of "Guess that Decibel."
Great if you have noisy neighbors and can tell the police the approximate decibel level of those rowdies.

Have teenage children? Use this to measure the music level coming from their room(s). Good way to set non partisan, objective limits. The sound level meter can also be used to measure the sound level of their car speakers. Extreme loudness can permanantly damage hearing.
Knowing decibel levels can alert us when or when not to use ear protection.
