Others have had trouble with the internal mechanism of the device, but my issue is with the metal cord. After using it for about a month to hold my work badge, the cord broke and sent my badge clattering to the floor. Luckily it broke in my office and not while I was walking through the subway. This is a good product, but it is so close to being great it almost hurts. For me the 18" length of the steel chain (I think it's actually steel wrapped, not sure if it's a steel core) is good enough for everything I use. The steel wire has a little permanent kink in it, wish it weren't there, but even that's not a big deal. If only the reeling mechanism were a little stronger, this would be great. Not that it doesn't reel in, it does, but it needs a slight bit of help at the end to reel in totally, and it isn't even much effort or anything, it becomes second nature, you do it without really thinking about it. I wouldn't even call it an annoyance, but if it weren't there at all, that would be great.
The alligator clip is also better than any other slip-clip or hook type clips. I would definitely buy this again because it is by far the best one of these retractable badge holders I've seen.

Like most people, I use this everyday extending and retracting multiple times everyday. I ordered two last May and I'm just about to order some more. The metal cables both broke at the same spot-at the end by the ring. The first one lasted about 8 months and my second just broke. I think when I get my replacement set, I'll put some tape where it rubs or retie the cable every couple of months, shortening the cable about an inch every time.

-Clip really holds on tight, it clamps down vs sliding

Cons:
-Clip is deeper/thicker than most due to clamp nature
-Cable rubs and eventually breaks
-Kink in cable

I just purchased my 2nd one of these. I use it every day at work and the first one lasted well over a year. It broke 2 days ago, so I went to my desk, ordered another one, and it arrived today. I'm back in business!
