Tools and Hardware Reviews of Neiko 01407A Stanless Steel 6-Inch Digital Caliper with Extra-Large LCD Screen and Instant SAE-Metric ConversionCustomer Review: Calipers Summary: 3 Stars
Cheap chineese calipers. They work OK and are accurate. I have to set the zero a lot but not a problem. Big zero button.
Don't know how long they will last. I guess it depends on your use. They are worth the price.
Customer Review: Can't Miss Summary: 5 Stars
I wanted to avoid the phrase "for the price," because this is a great gauge for almost any amount. However, when taking price into consideration, this gauge is unbeatable. As far as price to performance ratio is concerned, this is the best caliper available.
Customer Review: Cannot be beat for the money Summary: 5 Stars
I bought these to use for reloading ammunition, where thousandths of an inch count. I compared these against my father's calipers, bought from a big-name hunting retailer specifically for reloading, which cost almost 3X as much (and even those are at the lower end of the price spectrum.) I found these to be just as good if not a little better than the comparison. These are good, solid steel design that can measure several different ways. I only found a few less than perfect things:
1) When the unit is turned off, it takes a second or two for the screen to turn on once you start opening the calipers if you do not press the "on" button. On the higher priced calipers, this was instantaneous
2) When taking a measurement in the thicker, middle section of the calipers, I get different readings if taking the measurement at the top-middle portion vs. the bottom-middle portion- This tells me that the jaws are not sitting perfectly square. My difference in measurement was off by .0005", well within my tolerances for reloading.
Overall, for the price I paid, I am very satisfied.
Customer Review: Cheap, glithcy, dead! On a budget? Stick with analog! Summary: 1 Stars
I didn't want to spend a lot on calipers and bought these based on the good reviews. They worked fine right out of the box, but then the battery died after the first few uses (despite the auto shut-off). The second battery included was dead before I even used it (not surprising). After trying several different batteries, the thing never worked again. Getting them fixed will cost as much as I paid for them.
My advice? If you don't want to spend a lot for reliable calipers, buy analog dial calipers and skip these cheap, glitchy electronics.
Customer Review: DOA Summary: 1 Stars
I recently ordered the Neiko 6" SS caliper and was disappointed to find that it did not make repeatable measurements. Somewhere between 18 and 22 mm the caliper would magically gain 5.08mm (so that when you see 25mm on the scale, the digital readout has 30.08). I first thought this might be due to a weak battery, which I replaced with the spare included (no luck). I also thought that it might be due to the locking screw being loose which would allow the sensor to slip, but this also was not the case.
In the end I am returning the caliper and will try a different brand. As usual, Amazon's shipping and return policy is top notch.
