Tools and Hardware Reviews of Original Sobakawa Buckwheat PillowCustomer Review: The only pillow I sleep on Summary: 5 Stars
I'll admit that at first I found the pillow noisy and way too hard, but after a week, I was hooked. And now, 7 years later, this is the only pillow I sleep on. The "crunchy" sound mentioned in other reviews is a non issue since you don't move around once you find that perfect spot. I honestly don't even notice it anymore. And finding that "perfect spot" is easy since it shapes to the curves of your neck and head. I very rarely get a sore neck anymore. I take it with me whenever I travel since I've become so used to it. As crazy as it sounds to sleep on a bag of buckwheat hulls, I wouldn't have it any other way.
Customer Review: Too Small, Too Hard, Too Noisy, Too Gimmicky Summary: 1 Stars
Yeah, this pillow pretty much sucks. In addition to it being a tiny, crunchy, heavy bag of buckwheat husks, it doesn't even live up to it's biggest claim: "Keeps your head cool through the night." I did not find this to be the case at all. In fact, I would say this pillow retains heat better than most synthetic fibers in pillows. I tried it out for as long as I could bear (about 20 minutes) and you can clearly feel the pillow heating up to your body temperature. Dr. Watanabe is selling snake oil.
Customer Review: Totally real - Not a hoax. Summary: 5 Stars
Still using this pillow after 4 years. Took ~1 week to fully adjust myself. I LOVE IT. I cannot fall asleep without it. I absolutely need a cool head to sleep. The under neck support is superb and remains throughout the night. I no longer change positions during the night, nor do I even wake up. I also have elevated general indoor allergies and this pillow is superb for keeping my nose from being sunk between the sides of any regular dusty pillow. I recently tried to sleep on a regular pillow in a hotel and my neck and sinuses started hurting after 5 minutes.
Before using this, I had tried the foam contour pillow. That foam pillow made my head sweaty and the neck support was not as good as my sobakawa.
Yes, the sobakawa pillow is smaller than a standard pillow. This pillow is indeed heavier than a regular pillow (maybe 2x as heavy). So, if this pillow were standard size, it may be a bit heavy for frequent moves. However, this pillow does not even need to be the size it is. This pillow could be the size of a dvd case, because very little of your head and neck actually touch the pillow. This pillow is indeed that supportive (but not hard).
What is weird is, my family and friends all make fun of me for using the sobakawa. They just can't bring themselves to believe it is actually good. They even think it is nasty and unsanitary. They are fools!
Customer Review: Tried many types of pillows - this is the best! Summary: 5 Stars
As a massage therapist I see chronic neck pain daily. I have also experienced neck pain often due to neck strain (working on computer or leaning over my clients working). I tried the memory foam pillows, feather, IKEA types and none of them helped. This Sobakawa pillow allows the neck to naturally rest in a position where it is not strained in a position too high or low.
I was concerned the "noise" of the buckwheat would bother me but it never has. I LOVE this pillow!
