My boyfriend suspected mice had came into the house so he purchased these traps with the belief that, if we had mice, the mice would be killed instantly. Sadly, that is NOT the case!
I heard a small squeaking noise and scratching while he was away today. I discovered the red levers on the mouse traps were in the up position and I was horrified to realize that the noise had to be coming from the traps - meaning the mice were alive!
I'm ashamed to admit that it took me about 15 minutes to act because I just didn't know how to handle the situation. In the end, I put on some vinyl gloves, gently put the traps into a plastic bag, and carried them out into the yard. I slowly pushed down the lever and found one little mouse alive, looking very mangled with its eyes bulging. It was either too injured to come out immediately or too scared so I gently set the trap down to give it a chance to leave at its own pace. I turned to open the other trap but discovered that poor mouse was dead and had been flattened - in an upside down position.
Frankly, I think being crushed to death is a horrible way to go. I also learned that simply pushing the lever back into its original position does not necessarily lock it into place if you are trying to free an injured mouse. The 2nd trap, despite the fact that I had pushed the lever down and it appeared to be locked, slammed back up, further crushing the body of the dead mouse. Realizing the mouse I was trying to free could suffer a second crush, I immediately turned back and held the lever down for it so that it could exit without further trauma. It finally managed to get its mangled body out of the trap and slowly staggered away. No doubt, it will die.
I don't want mice but I also don't want to torture them to death. There has to be a better way and I will absolutely NEVER buy this product again!
