Customer Review: Excellent form, problematic function

We purchased this OXO toilet plunger because its holder looks like the holder of our OXO toilet brush and therefore looks good, if you want to keep them both in a bathroom. (Our old toilet plunger, one that works well, has no holder and is kept in the garage.) The design concept is excellent.
OXO products usually work well, so we were surprised that this plunger is flimsy. That is, the black "rubber" part is not strong enough, and you have to keep plunging away. Eventually it does its job--and at least it is not so weak that it turns inside out--but our old one works much more efficiently. Another problem is that the black material smells very strong of whatever it is made of. After a few days I realized that it had to be out of the house. I left it outside for about a week, then left it in a seldom-used bathroom, and only now after about 5 weeks has it lost enough of the annoying chemical smell to be put in the bathroom it was intended for. To sum up: if I hadn't had to go to the trouble of mailing it back, I probably would have returned it, because its looks don't really justify its flimsiness.
