Tools and Hardware Reviews of PUR 3-Stage Horizontal Faucet Mount Chrome FM-9400BCustomer Review: Convient and Useful item Summary: 4 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I have hard city water at my house which I notice quit frequently has a strong chlorine smell. The PUR FM-9400B 3-Stage Horizontal Faucet Mount completely eliminated the chlorine smell and taste from my water. The fact that it's on my faucet makes it very convenient to quickly have drinking water available at any time. I received the PUR FM-9400B 3-Stage Horizontal Faucet Mount as an Amazon Vine item but had the option between this one and the Vertical mount . I choose the horizontal mount as my sink faces a bar top and didn't want the vertical mount to show above my bar top.
Installation was extremely easy. I had to take the end cap off my faucet , place the filter into the Pur mount and click the Pur mount to my faucet. There! That was it.
The PUR FM-9400B 3-Stage Horizontal Faucet Mount does not require all your water to go through this. For every day use other than drinking water (washing your hands, cleaning dishes etc) the water doesn't go through the filter there is has a black lever on the side when you want to switch the flow of water to go through the filter system. Just don't expect the water flow to be the same since it has to go through the filtering system. As the water filters the volume of water is reduced by nearly half.
The PUR FM-9400B 3-Stage Horizontal Faucet Mount significantly reduces the smell and taste of chlorine from my water
The PUR FM-9400B 3-Stage Horizontal Faucet Mount made out of hard plastic covered with chrome so I'm not sure how sturdy this device is. A silly observation and not one which affected my rating but my kitchen design is oil rubbed bronze so this chrome color sticks out like a sore thumb. It would be nice if there were more color options than chrome, stainless steel and white since it's an item which can't be hidden.
Customer Review: Culligan is better! Summary: 1 Stars
I don't know why, but I went through THREE Pur faucet filters before finally chucking them in the garbage and buying the Culligan Faucet Filter. The Pur filters were always leaking from the connectors. And if you tried to adjust them, you'd end up stripping the plastic from the connector and being left with an unsightly, scraped up piece of plastic on your sink. And if you do manage to get the Pur filter off to try to repair the leak with plumber's tape, good luck getting the filter back on again.
But the Culligan's connector is made of metal (whereas both the filter housing and the connector of the Pur filter was made of plastic), so it's easy to get the Culligan filter on and off the sink without any leaking whatsoever!
I also love how easy it is to replace the filters! Just a twist of the fingers and it comes right out. I once got a deep cut from replacing a Pur filter where the edge of the cap sliced right into my hand while I was twisting it off, since there were no finger grips to hold onto.
The Culligan is also nice b/c it doesn't sit as low as the Pur filter, so you can put tall bottles or water pitchers under it with more ease. And the quality of the filter and the taste of the water is the same, if not better than the Pur filter. My main complaint against the Culligan is that it doesn't have an indicator to show you when to change the filter; they tell you just to mark it on your calendar, when to change the filter next.
One last hesitation I had about switching over was the fact that I didn't see replacement Culligan filters readily available in the stores. Pur replacement filters are sold in bulk at Target and my local warehouse store. But once, when Amazon was running a buy 1, get 1 half off sale on the Culligan filters, I saw that buying them one by one on Amazon.com was STILL cheaper than buying the Pur filters in bulk at the warehouse store. Add to that the fact that the Culligan filter is cheaper to begin with and you won't have to waste money replacing it periodically when it breaks down and you just have a product that makes good "dollars and sense".
Customer Review: Disappointed Summary: 2 Stars
One word: shoddy. I have had the former style for 3 years. Even after reading similar negative reviews of that model, I still bought it. It was trouble free for those 3 years and provided great tasting water. The only complaint I had was that because the unit was plastic (with a not-so-real chrome finish), it was difficult to remove water spots and hard water stains without removing the plastic coating. Sadly, about a week ago it started leaking where it joins the faucet. Apparently some of the rubber inside had degraded and was allowing water through. It tore off as I attempted to remove it. I'm just glad I got just over 3 years out of it when most reviewers suggested a year would be the norm.
So, after reading all the negative reviews of the new model, I chose to ignore them (mostly because I still have 5 filter cartridges left) and bought the new one. I like the look of it better, and I like the concept of snapping it on and off to replace the cartridges. The rubber fitting went on easily and there were no leaks when I turned on the water (without the unit attached). However, once I snapped on the unit and turned the water on, it leaked where it "snaps." When I flipped the lever for filtered water it leaked even more profusely and even started spraying water all over the place. I took the unit off and no more leaking. My conclusion is that the seal, where the unit joins the faucet, simply isn't water tight. It's not even something I can overlook because the price is reasonable. At the moment (until I can return the product), I have to drape a towel over it to avoid the spraying.
I'll exchange it for another one and hope I have better luck with the next one. It's a relatively simple filter system, and I'd think the product engineers could figure this out--unless of course they're the ones who even BP wouldn't hire to stop a leak...which isn't saying much.
Should I have better luck with the next one, I'll update my review.
Customer Review: Don't Waste Your Time Summary: 1 Stars
We feel that we've given this company a few years to get this right, but I am done with this product. Over the past couple of years, we have had to contact the company at least five (my wife says six or seven) to get a new unit because the one in place leaks all over the place after a couple months of use. Once again the latest unit has started leaking profusely. I might be able to tolerate a few drips here and there, but half the water that is supposed to either come out of the faucet or come out of the filter never makes it where it's supposed to. This product has been nothing but a lesson in frustration, and I will look for another water filtration company to do business with.
Customer Review: Don't waste your money!!! Summary: 1 Stars
The Pur Water filter (faucetmount) is the WORST water filter I've ever tried. The "new and improved" triple filtration system they use is horrible. I can only use it 5-6 times before the red light starts blinking to replace the filter. At first I thought it was a fluke so I replaced the filter, and 6 uses later- there goes that red light. It is an absolute waste of money. I cannot and will not recommend your product to anyone.
