Customer Review: Bad execution. Fails too soon.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Initially, I found the PUR water purifier to work well. It was very easy to install, taking only a minute. Even with clean NYC water (some of the best in the nation), I could taste a slight improvement after it ran through the filter. However, after only a week of light use, significant problems developed, which caused me to stop using the filter completely.

First a few pros:

* Easy installation. You remove the current aerator from the faucet and replace it with one included with the purifier. Then the filtration unit snaps onto place. Install the new cartridge, run the water for 5 minuutes, and you're good to go.

* The filtration unit removes easily with the push of two buttons, in case it gets in the way of washing dishes, etc.

* The water tastes good. I already had good tasting water, but could still taste a slight improvement with the use of the filter.

* There a LED that light up a certain color to indicate how much life is left in the filter. Unfortunately, I stopped using the filter too soon to test how accurately it works.

Unfortunately, the following issues mar the usability of this filter:

* Significant leaks developed within a week of light use. This happened where the filter unit snaps onto the faucet. Water also came out of the extra hole in the back of the filter chamber - I'm not sure if this is normal, but it wasn't an issue in the beginning; if it is normal, it seems like a purposeful waste of water.

* PUR claims a flow rate of 2.5 liters per minute, however I measured only 1.5 liter per minute. The pressure from my faucet should be sufficient enough to allow for the max flow rate.

* There seems to be significant backpressure caused by the filter, which might explain the leaking. In fact, after a week of use, my faucet developed a leak from the base where it attaches to the sink (this is in addition to the leak from where the filter unit attaches). All the leaking and occasional spraying of water has made me stop using this unit.

* The unit is bulky and really gets in the way of washing dishes. It's nice that it's easy to remove the filter with the push of some buttons, but this seems to wear out the washer head. The washer head also doesn't have an adequate aerator attached to it, so when the faucet is used without the filter unit, the water flow is harsh. This makes it difficult to wash dishes without water splashing everywhere. PUR does include an aerator in the filter unit itself, so that the water flow is softened when the unit is attached and the filter bypassed - but they really should have included one on the washer head itself.

* The entire unit is made of plastic, despite looking like chrome. While it's nice to remove impurities from the local water supply, I'm not comfortable ingesting whatever might be leaching from the plastic as a replacement.

Customer Review: Be sure to get the new designed model
Summary: 5 Stars

Pur has come out with a new design for both the vertical and horizontal models. I purchased a replacement from a local retailer since I had a nice sized coupon to use. The new vertical model I purchased has several well thought-out changes. The vertical piece doesn't rotate, there is a small lever on the right of the faucet that flips down to turn on the filtered water. The new mounting for the faucet had the unit just snap onto the mounting. That way the unit just clicks off to change the filter. Also, where the regular non-filtered water comes out you cannot attach a swivel unit. That was the cause of most of my problems with my prior Pur units. In using the swivel unit over time, the stress on the mounting of the Pur unit would cause it to leak there. Since you now cannot mount anything on the bottom of the unit where regular water comes out there is no stress on the faucet mounting. Time will tell if there are any weak areas in the new design but for now Pur has addressed the earlier design problems.

Customer Review: Believe everything you read
Summary: 2 Stars

My wife and I read many reviews on this faucet system and decided that the price is right. We read the warnings about pieces falling off and other problems. We went ahead and bought it. Those warnings were all true. We bought this within the last 7 months and within 3 months the decorative chrome plate at the faucet fell off. Just last week a crack developed where the PUR device connects to the kitchen faucet and it sprays water everywhere. I was happy with the filtered water but I will not buy this product again. In fact I doubt I would buy any PUR product again. My reasoning for this is that these reviews were over time and PUR has done nothing to fix the problems. We just bought a new fridge and it had a water filter and despenser built in (Inside not on the door) and it works just as well. If you buy PUR you are paying for a name not for a quality product.

Customer Review: Best filter, for the money. Period.
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the best filter I have ever used. Period. I wore out my first one, which was beginning to leak ...after delivering several hundred gallons. I had to try a couple others, beforehand, and regret it.

I tried a Brita ...but it kept blowing off the faucet --even with the adapters, they sent, when I called their helpline.

I then got a Culligan, and, the water came out in a drizzle that could be shut off, with one finger held over the outlet ...though the water pressure is 30+ psi. The Cullgan filter is advertised to deliver far more water than PUR, but it lasted two months, rather than the four month average the PUR filters had been lasting (over the previous 2 - 2.5 years).

I finally ordered another PUR, and am very satisfied, once more.

As for the Brita... I returned, it. The Culligan will doubtless end up in a landfill, somewhere, since I can no longer return, it.

Customer Review: Best, most economical way to filter water.
Summary: 5 Stars

Had mine since they were out. I have a pressure reducer on the incoming water line. I run water to make sure it isn't hot. Then I turn off the water and switch the filter on. Reduce the water pressure and it will last a long time. I had the older faucet mount before this and it lasted a long time. Check Consumer reports this is one of the best most economical ways to filter water.
