First 3 months vacuum was fine. Then a bearing burned out; Panasonic gave me a hrad time, but finally replaced it. Now, belt keeps coming off (I've tried several new belts). Vacuum essentially uselsess and out of warrannty.
IMO, there are several design faults

This is a great vacuum. I have two long-haired, indoor cats and one alley cat that comes and goes as he pleases. In need of a GOOD vacuum to pick up the cat fur and after reading the previous reviews regarding this vacuum, I decided to purchase it. It picked up a whole bunch of hair and my area carpet looked good as new, saving it from the garbage. I liked how it left the vacuum lines and adjusts to many levels of carpet automatically.Customer Review: This is the best Vaccum cleaner!

I totally agree with Karen. If you have pets, this is the machine for you. We have 1 long haired dog, and 4 cats. We vacuum 2-3x a day. This machine has lasted almost 2 years with NO PROBLEMS. Not even a broken belt. NO CLOGGING! This machine is powerful! It really does the job. Prior, we were going through vacuum cleaners 2x a year. They'd blow up, the motors would fry, and we'd have to use a wire hanger to unclog the machines at least every other day. Not this machine. It's super! We think it's the double hose system. If you're a pet person, buy this machine!

I just received this vacuum today & am already amazed by the powerful suction of this machine. My husband, an obessive clean freak, vacuums daily, and we had what I thought was a good vacuum, but boy was I wrong. This machine picked up almost a full cannister of filth that my Dirt Devil left behind. We have two cats, one is a domestic short hair and the other a persian, and the hair that this vacuum extracted from our carpet was frightening. The switch from carpet to bare floor was simple and made the task of tracked litter a breeze to vacuum off the linolium floor. The only problem I had was that I should have switched the machine to bare floor when vacuuming a bath mat in our bathroom (it's so powerful it almost ate the rug), but no harm done I'll just switch it next time.
I'd have to say that it's a bit heavier than I had hoped, but it is amazingly easy to push (by far better than my dirt devil and easier to push than the lightweight bissel bagless my grandmother recently purchased). It is considerably lighter than my other vacuum. My back used to get stiff after vacuuming, but not anymore, it's easy to push, pull and turn. In fact it's easier to turn than my "swivel guide" dirt devil.
The cannister is easy to empty and has a dial inside the cannister to loosen small particles from the filter (instead of clinging to it)
Another nice feature is that there are no screws to remove should you need to change the belt or the hepa filter, you simply have to slip the plastic sheilds off to change them.
The on-board attachments aren't anything fancy (your typical stuff found with most vacuums), with the exception of the extra hose for extended reach. I'm sure the hose will come in handy when vacuuming stairs since the reach is extended by about 10 feet.
Another bonus, the front end of the vacuum is low to the ground which makes it easy to vacuum under furniture, in fact it was able to get under some of the baseboards in my house where the pile was lower (in rooms with berber). The dirt finder light was glowing like crazy under there, at least I know it's clean now!
It also seems to pull dirt from an inch or so beyond the front of the unit, in other words, when vacuuming bare floors it can suck up dirt in tight corners that you typically would have to sweep.
I also like that the handle can be adjusted to the user's height there are three height adjustments the lowest would be good for kids or really short people (I'm 5'2") I prefer the middle & I'm sure my husband will use the highest setting. The handle is also ergonomically designed and quite comfortable in the hand.
I would definately recommend this vacuum to anyone, especially if you have pets, this vacuum sucked up cat hair that I couldn't even see. This vacuum is well designed, and worth every penny (which is less than many machines with low ratings). I'm so glad I didn't buy that Hoover I was thinking about two weeks ago.
UPDATE: After one week of use, this vacuum has brought a new life to my carpets, the panasonic seems to have lifted the pile higher (in areas of high traffic) leaving a much plusher feel. It feels like walking on new carpet again. Additionally, I have also noticed that when dusting furniture, there is much less to clean. I guess the HEPA filter is doing a great job as well.
