Tools and Hardware Reviews of Panasonic NI-C78SR Steam/Dry Iron with Stainless-Steel SoleplateCustomer Review: Excellent iron with just a couple flaws. Summary: 4 Stars
I needed to order an iron fast and didn't have time to do any research on quality or reliability. A quick search here on Amazon and the sheer number of excellent reviews on this iron caught my eye - and they weren't wrong. This is the best iron I've owned thus far. Upon receiving it, I was surprised at how small the actual iron and soleplate is. I'm used to a "full-sized" iron and I was a little worried that this one was just a compact version compared to other models (compact meaning less featured). However, after using it, I actually prefer this size. I mostly iron my long-sleeved work shirts and the size of this iron enables me to iron much closer to the sleeve's cuffs than my old iron could. This iron also produces a LOT of continuous steam on the high-steam setting, which is great. If you're concerned about the bright green color of the stock product photo on this site, you'll be pleased that in person it is much darker. Still, it would have been nice if they had chosen a more neutral accent color. Finally, the retractable cord is a convenience I will never again do without - it's perfect for my apartment where storage space is at a premium.
Cons: There is no safety light to indicate that the unit is on. This is a major flaw in the design. There is an LED that shows when the iron is currently heating, but once it reaches the desired temperature, the light shuts off and there is no further visual indication that the unit is on until it needs to re-heat. This could potentially lead to injury or increase the likelihood of accidentally leaving the unit plugged in. There is of course an auto shut-off feature, but if you're in a hurry and you pass by the iron while it's still plugged in, there's a greater possibility to completely miss that it is currently on.
The temperature-setting dial is vague and has no reference-icons on it, only numbers. Meaning that until one is accustomed to what the number settings represent, it is necessary to reference the guide in the manual or on the base of the unit. It's also not entirely clear what temperature you have the unit set to, there is no arrow or precise marker and there are potentially 50+ settings with all of the clicks of the dial. After previously owning a digital unit with exact settings for wool, cotton etc, I find it to be a minor annoyance. I will say, however, that the dial is very sturdy and is designed such that it is unlikely one will accidentally bump the dial with the hand that is ironing.
Overall, I am very pleased with this iron. As I mentioned earlier, it's the best iron I've ever owned as far as performance, but the two issues that I mentioned keep it from receiving a perfect rating.
Customer Review: Excellent purchase Summary: 5 Stars
I am so happy I purchased this iron. I went to a friends house and she had one. After using it one time I knew I wanted to own one. And I am so glad I did. I don't even use starch anymore. This iron makes my shirts look amazing all by itself. I'm not a person that writes reviews but it was a great purchase!!
Customer Review: Fine iron, affordable price Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this iron to replace an old Panasonic iron with a retractable cord.
First, I'm absolutely sold on having a retractable cord. Besides the fact that this iron works very well, the retractable cord is the main reason I've stuck with Panasonic. It makes storing the iron so much easier. I leave my ironing board up, in a spare room, and keep the iron (upright) on the board when I'm not using it. I don't have to worry about the cord unwrapping and one of our cats getting a hold of it. The retracting mechanism works very well; it worked quite well on the old one, but they've obviously improved it on this new one.
This iron creates a lot of steam, which I like because it easily gets all wrinkles out, even on very creased clothes that you left in the dryer much too long. Besides being usable as a normal steam iron it is usable vertically in steam mode so that you can get wrinkles out of hanging clothes.
The removable water tank is also a nice feature. The iron is the right weight (it has some heft but isn't too heavy; or worse, too light). I also like the stainless steel soleplate; I prefer that to a supposedly non-stick surface, which usually isn't.
I haven't found anything I don't like about this iron, and the price is right. It works better and has more features than many irons much more expensive.
Customer Review: GREAT IRON Summary: 5 Stars
I HAVE LOOKED FOR A LONG TIME FOR A GOOD IRON THAT WAS AFFORDABLE, AND I WAS VERY PLEASED WHEN I FOUND THIS IRON. I HAVE USED IT A FEW TIMES NOW, AND IT IS THE BEST IRON I HAVE HAD FOR A LONG TIME. I HAVE A FEW OTHER IRONS I BOUGHT, AND THEY WERE A DISAPPOINGMENT. I CANNOT USE THEM, AND IT WAS MONEY WASTED. BUT I CAN TRULY SAY THIS ONE IS REALLY GOOD.
