Tools and Hardware Reviews of Porter-Cable 343K 5-Inch Random Orbit Sander Kit - Hook & Loop Pad

Customer Review: PORTER CABLE 343K ORBITAL SANDER
Summary: 4 Stars

THE ONLY THING I DON'T LIKE ABOUT THIS SANDER IS THE VACUUM HOOK-UP DOESN'T ACCEPT THE 1 1/4" HOSE SECURLY

Customer Review: Porter Cable Palm Sander
Summary: 4 Stars

I have had a palm sander for many years, but it recently broke. I spent a lot of time looking at all the models before purchasing this Porter Cable sander. I have been impressed. The hook and loop pad makes changing sandpaper a snap. The sander is easily handled and directed. It's easy to cover the surface quickly and evenly due to the ease of handling and the power of the unit. Dust collection works great! It won't go into corners effectively, but then again even sanders with square pads aren't effective in a corner. This is a good product that I can recommend to anyone looking for a palm sander.

Customer Review: Porter-Cable 343K 5" Sander Review
Summary: 5 Stars

I am a fairly active wordworker (a hobbyist) that builds our own furniture, primarily out of cherry. I have four 5' random orbit P-C sanders along with a host of others. I find all of the P-C Sanders to be superb, reliable and durable products with only one minor weakness. I believe that the dust collection canisters could be a little stronger and that the airflow to them should be strengthened a bit. I do get a fair amount of residue on the outside of the sander that probably could be "collected" a bit better. A couple of mine have more than ten years of fairly continuous service with the only additional costs being that of the sanding pad, as the hooks seem to wear out after a great deal of us. Great products!!

Customer Review: Premature bearing failure
Summary: 1 Stars

I've gone through two of these units and two of the previous model (333). Each time the bearings failed after three to six months of use. I talked to my finish carpenter and my stair builder and they both recommended a different brand (Milwaukee). I'm buying that next.

Customer Review: Priced appropriately
Summary: 4 Stars

This is my second PC 5" orbital and it performs pretty much like the first one. Between the two, I owned a Dewalt 423 sander and I have operated them back to back. Without a doubt, the Dewalt performs better in several ways. The Porter Cable is less aggressive and vibrates less, but has a tendency to "grab" and get away from you. Its power switch does not have a dust boot, so it will likely fail earlier than other parts (as happened with my first PC sander). Dust collection works pretty well, and I appreciate the change to an 8 hole pattern. Also, the vacuum port hooks right up to my Fein hose without any need for additional adapters - much like the Dewalt.

Basically, you get what you pay for with the PC - an affordable sander that will work reasonably well until the switch fails or you wear out the velcro pad. Though the Dewalt vibrates and costs a bit more, I definitely prefer it to this.
