Customer Review: Great idea, poor execution

Sorry P-C, I can't give you the five stars.The third time I used this kit, the 2 1/8" bit bound in the door and the plastic arms that hold the guide bushing snapped right off. Fortunately I was able to exchange for a new one. The jig really needs to be solid metal, not plastic.
The 1" bit is a self-feeding auger bit - works great! The 2 1/8" bit unfortunately is not. I had to put a LOT of pressure on the bit to get it to work. For the price, I was expecting a self-feeding 2 1/8" bit.
If they could fix these two major flaws, I would give it 5 stars. As I said in the title, this is a great idea with poor execution.

I ordered this product with no reservations, having been familiar (I thought) with ones I had used in years passed (37+ years in the business of trim and finish carpentry). I was somewhat dismayed when I opened the box to find the exact jig I was familiar with, with the exception it was made from nearly 90% plastic materials!!! Why should I be surprised...isn't nearly everything made of plastic anymore...expecially things that shouldn't be! I put the jig to use immediately, having waited on this order to finish out some doors we had jigged and hung earlier in the week. The boring jig worked pretty much as I remember the old metal ones working. I was only apprehensive about tightening the plastic knob tight enough to secure the jig to the door (how many times have you overtightened a plastic knob on anything, only to have it come off in your hand?)The simple solution I came up with was to put a small 4" wood clamp on the jig holding it fast to the door. How about it Porter-Cable, can you make room in the 'plastic' carrying case for the 4"wood clamp?Customer Review: Professional Locksmith

I use my tools as a professional, installing as many as 4, 6 or 8 installations a day. I have had my lock installation tool for about a year and a half. This tool is well thought out for complete start to finish work in the most efficient way. It is more economical than some tools I have used but performs as well. It is more expensive than economy kits offered at some local lumber/hardware stores but is much more efficient and durable. In my demanding use my tool set is now showing considerable ware but I have been able to buy replacement parts as necessary. Dislikes: 1.) I find the 1" boring bit too agressive at times. I see doors of many differant materials from day to day. When trying to get a fine finish on your job, this augger bit really bites in making it hard to control, and sometimes produces splintering or cracks that deface an otherwise beautiful job. 2.) The 2 1/8' boring bit wears (Dulls) rapidly, especially if you hit the occasional hidden nail or screw. In my area I have had no luck finding someone setup to resharpen them. replacements are expensive.I would buy this tool again.

I bought this because looking at the picture it looked like a well made system. The discription said nothing about plastic parts. And like one of the other reveiwers said the auger bit is a much to strong. Using a forsner bit works much better. Porter cable is a good name, but shame on you Porter for using such cheap material on the heart of the unit, (the jig itself)Customer Review: Take a look at the Classic Engineering 10800.

I have about 30 doors to hang. I bought the Classic Engineering 10800 and the Porter Cable 511. I received the Classic first and gave it a test drive through some scrap. It work so well that I never even needed to open the box of the Porter Cable and sent the PC packing.
