Tools and Hardware Reviews of RPS Magnetic Central Air Conditioning Vent Cover - 3 PackCustomer Review: Not for use on ceiling registers Summary: 1 Stars
Although I cut them to fit, they fell off the closed 8" x 14" ceiling register as soon as the air started to flow.
I did read other people's reviews here, but had had good results with similar covers on smaller registers, so it seemed to be worth trying. I tried using some very strong rare-earth magnets, but they barely stuck to the cover.
Customer Review: Two words: WORTH LESS Summary: 1 Stars
Attempted to install these on three ceiling vents. The magnets are not strong enough to keep them connected, even with the air off. Don't waste your time or money. Buy a roll of duct tape and create trailer home ambiance.
Customer Review: Weak Summary: 1 Stars
As noted in previous reviews, these air vent covers aren't magnetically strong enough to cling to an air vent with air coming out of it. Hell, I couldn't get them to stay on even then the air wasn't blowing, much less when it was blowing.
For air returns, these would probably work okay if the magnetics were strong enough to hold it to the register.
Customer Review: Works well if trimmed to fit register Summary: 5 Stars
We have used them successfully on ceiling registers in an area with strong airflow. As long as you close the register and make sure the cover is trimmed to fit, they stick very well. They can easily be trimmed with scissors or a utility knife to fit the register closely.
But you cannot simply slap on a whole sheet on top of a register and expect it to work. The illustration Amazon shows is very misleading in this respect. If you are not prepared to trim them, don't buy them.
One problem can be registers that have a lot of paint buildup. And of course they only work on steel registers.
If covering the supply registers doesn't cut airflow enough, try covering the returns as well.
Customer Review: use over air returns Summary: 5 Stars
These vent covers are meant to be used on the air returns (where air is sucked back to the central system), not the vents where the warm or cool air blows into the room. In winter you can cover returns that are high on the wall, preventing already-warm air from being pulled back to the furnace. In the summer, block off the lower returns to prevent cool air from being pulled back to the AC unit. Since the air is being pulled in through the returns (as opposed to being forced out) these covers have no problem staying put.
