Tools and Hardware Reviews of Racor PBH-1R Ceiling-Mounted Bike Lift

Customer Review: 14 foot ceiling
Summary: 5 Stars

Great storage solution fo a 14 foot ceiling and the best purchase price (Have seen it sold for over $50.00). Holding my bike, toddler stroller on one and a 16 foot kayak on another. just use gloves to move heavy items with rope!!!

Customer Review: A generic product sold elsewhere for less
Summary: 3 Stars

This bike lift works well. The installation, however, was frustrating. I happened to have a piece of 3/4"x3 1/2" lumber, which was perfect for attaching the lift to the ceiling. Still, the screws that came with the package were of the wrong type and poor quality. Their heads got stripped easily. Fortunately, I had some #8x2" and #8x3" wood screws that did the job.

The overriding reason why one should not bother with this product is the fact that it is sold by another manufacturer at a lower price. Because I have two bikes, I also ordered RAD Cycle Products Ceiling Mount Bike Hoist - Bicycle Hoists just out of curiosity. They turn out to be identical in design and construction. Only the paints differ slightly. There is thus no reason to buy Racor.

Customer Review: A good deal for the price
Summary: 4 Stars

After passing up similar units in the $50 range, I jumped at the chance to buy one @ $16. It arrived in good order, all parts included, with a decent set of instructions in English & Spanish. The pully plates are sturdy & nicely finished and the hooks articulated to accommodate many bikes. It's fully installed now and my bike's safely tucked into the ceiling of my garage. The only downside is that I can't get the "drop prevention" mechanism to work properly, and if I raised and lowered the bike daily it would be very annoying; as it is, the bike goes into storage in late fall and out in the spring, so I just tie it off to the cleat and it's not too much of a problem. For the money, this is a good deal, but not for the frequent user (unless you can adapt the release ratchet).

Customer Review: A good product but not necessary.
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this contraption to keep my new bike from getting beat up. It took a few trips up and down the ladder to get it right. It works ok but it takes a half mile of rope to hoist the bike up. It looks like something the Egyptians invented to build the pyramids. What bothered me most was all the rope I had to screw with. After I used it a couple times I took it down and went to HD and bought two bike hangers for about 2.50 ea. They are really big hooks covered in rubber that screw to the ceiling. Now I just lift the bike up and hook the front wheel, then lift and hook the back wheel. It's a whole lot faster and you don't have all that stuff hanging down all over.

Customer Review: A good product, but figuring out how to mount it is challenging.
Summary: 5 Stars

This product is everything it is claimed to be. Well made, finish is great, well designed, and delivered on time. It deserves a nearly perfect score. The only problem is, there should be better instructions for the layout, AND suggestions on how to handle ceiling mounting without studs close to the desired mounting area.

Fortunately I am reasonably good at pre-visualize practical clearance issues, and did well in solid geometry. Without those skills, it would have been a very difficult install. For example, how far away from a wall would they recommend mounting this, due to handlebar clearance issues? What about double mounting for 2 bikes? I had several re-mounts because I had guessed wrong on the latter.

Like I said, a great product, but be sure to think out actual fitment BEFORE you start mounting this. Plan on a few hours of work if your garage is pretty well packed, like mine. If you have a lot of open real estate, it's a breeze.
