Tools and Hardware Reviews of Racor PHL-1R Pro HeavyLift 4-by-4-Foot Cable-Lifted Storage RackCustomer Review: Almost perfect Summary: 4 Stars
The bottom line is that this product is exactly as advertised and was the perfect solution for what I wanted to accomplish .. storage of the middle seats of our Toyota Sienna which otherwise take up a lot of garage floor space. Now, the reason I did not give it a 5-Star rating. The assembly instructions are weak and would not be supportive of the mechanically dis-inclined. There is an 800 number to call for help so that might take care of the instructions problem. Then there are the lift cables. It appeared that one of the cables (which are assembled at the factory) was done by either a very disgrunted employee or someone with inadequate skills or training. The cables are a double loop with locking clamps design at each end and one of the cables had much too large of loops making it about 20 inches shorter than the other cable. When I set out to correct the problem, I discovered that the cable clamps were only finger tight which could have proved disasterous with sufficient (but within specs) weight. So, if you are up for a bit of an assembly challenge, you should be quite happy with the end result.
Customer Review: Best garage lift!! Summary: 5 Stars
Was so easy to install. Not as complicated as you would think to put up. We have stored several air conditioner units on it - very strong. Excellent pricing - sells for almost twice as much in other stores. Highy recommend.
Customer Review: Best garage storage system available! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased three Heavy Lift's from Amazon over a year ago and have been extremely pleased with these storage devices. They are ruggedly built and easy to install. The units come with a hand crank which works well but I have found that cutting the handle off and using a portable electric drill makes raising and lowering the unit a dream. One of my units has developed a slight roughness in the gearbox. I sent an email to Racor describing the problem and have learned that a new gearbox is already in route at no charge. This email was answered in less than 24 hours. A great product and wonderful customer support - it doesn't get any better. I give this storage unit my highest recommendation.
Customer Review: Cheap drive mechanism / brace - otherwise good Summary: 4 Stars
Easy to put together and install. My garage ceiling is 11' and it will not come all the way to the floor, but that is okay by me and is easy to load. The brace that hold the drive mechanism flexes a lot when putting the rack up. When I first start it really seems like it is going to break and I have NOT overloaded it at all. With the provided handle it goes up and down VERY SLOWLY, so I tried to use a drill... works, but not very well. The hook on the handle easily hits the mechanism lock and the first time I used a drill it bent the locking mechanism pretty bad. I straightened it back out and no matter how slowly I used the drill the hook kept hitting the lock.
Sounds like I'm not happy, but I really am. I am going to buy 1 or 2 more to store hurricane shutters over my garage door area which will save me tons of space, time, and energy when a big storm approaches.
Customer Review: Cheaply made and wrong/missing parts included Summary: 1 Stars
I was expecting a well built product from the Racor PHL-1R Pro HeavyLift model since it was supposed to be the heavier duty version of the lighter weight model Pro+. I bought two of these at once and was dissapointed at the cheap materials and construction when I opened the package. The wire grid sections were bent and fit terribly on the support beams. The J-hooks and nuts were of inferior quality with three of them having stripped out threads. The included lag screws for mounting the support rails to the ceiling rafters were cheap grade and I twisted off two of them upon installation into the joists after following the directions and pre-drilling 1/8" pilot holes for the lag screws. Do yourself a BIG favor and make a trip to the local hardware store and pick up some quality hardened lag screws and extra J-hooks to avoid the frustration I had trying to install this product.
Worst thing of all is that both of these units were shipped with the WRONG gear box assembly for the hoisting mechanism. They were packaged with the lightweight PRO+ gearbox which apparently has a much smaller drive shaft than what ships with the HeavyLift model. There was NO POSSIBLE WAY to continue the installation until the correct model gearbox can be shipped as replacements to what was obviously poor quality control during packaging of these units. I mean, BOTH kits had the WRONG part!! So, I'm stuck with partially installed units hung on the ceiling awaiting replacement parts.
Do yourself a favor and avoid this product. It's not worth it!
