A recent power outage made it seem good to get a reliable lamp or lantern to supplement the candles. I found this Rayovac and read users reviews. The bottom IS a bit fussy to get back on after putting batteries in, but a little patience and it goes on tight. This lantern is a very handy size and the handle can go over your arm if you need to carry things in a dark house. The best thing is - It is BRIGHT, almost enough to happily read by. I agree with all other superlative reviews. This lantern IS bright. However, as another reviewer said, its best configuration is with the diffuser off, and hanging upside down form a high point. That configuration seems to nearly double the illumination.Customer Review: ALL-OVER ILLUMINATION

This lantern is great. I think it is the brightest battery-powered one that is made at this time. It is pretty small, but still puts-out a lot of light.
It is very adaquate and useful for illuminating areas for home repair projects, such as under the kitchen sink, repairing the faucet valve in the bath tub, lots of plumbing projects, in the engine compartment for cars, electrical repairs, etc.
What is most useful is its abiliy to light-up areas where you need to see the complete picture to solve the problem: because it's a bright lantern, you get good light in 360 degrees, instead of just in one direction (like you would with a flashlight). Worth the money.
I am very happy with it, so far.

THIS LIGHT IS PERFECT! IT'S SMALL, RUGGEDLY BUILT AND EMITS PLENTY OF LIGHT. ACTUALLY, IT'S BETTER THAN I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE. AND PLEASE, PEOPLE, THE BATTERY COMPARTMENT IS NOT THE SLIGHTEST ISSUE. I own one.
Very bright and very well built!
For $23, it's steal. I also own the family size 8-cell Coleman LED lantern. This Rayovac is brighter on 3 cells and more durable and weather resistant construction.
They also make a mini version of this lantern which I also own. Looks exactly the same, but smaller and uses 3-AAs.
Just as good, but in a mini package. Not as many lumens as its big brother, but all the same quality.
I run mine on high capacity 8,000 MAh Ni-MH d-cells, and it works great, and lasts forever!
Now they are making low self-discharge Ni-Mh D-cells if you pack this lantern or store it before using.
