Tools and Hardware Reviews of Rayovac SE3DLN Sportsman Xtreme 300-Lumen LED Lantern

Customer Review: Bright but not just misses
Summary: 4 Stars

I really like this light. It's heavy and rugged with a nice beam pattern. However, it's not good for reading. I bought this for power outages but it was not totally useful since you can't read with it. The light is actually sourced at the base and is directed up. It's not directed down for reading. You can invert the light but that still does not have the best angle for reading. Coleman makes better lanterns for this purpose, any of their 180+ lumen lanterns can be bright enough for reading. They are bigger (and generally more expensive) though and so require more space to keep. A better choice is http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0045WFX7O/ref=oss_product. This is small but bright enough to read, just as rugged and has a cool feature that allows it to be converted to a torch light but slightly more expensive. Word of caution, it doesn't have a diffuser so it might be too bright for most to look at directly. I dont have a problem with it.

Customer Review: Bright li'l sucker for what it is
Summary: 4 Stars

First things first, I really don't understand why so many people are making a huge deal about the battery lid. Seriously, folks, you have to take the darn thing OFF in the first place to insert the batteries; maybe pay attention? On top of that the important bits are called out in red and, IMHO, couldn't be anymore straight forwards. Line up the red bits using common sense, close lid, twist, done. Was that so hard?

As for the latern itself, it's small! Really didn't pay attention to the dimmensions, so when the box arrived I actually thought it couldn't be right. More the fool me, but no matter. Popped in three D-cell batteries, turned off the lights and was immediately impressed. Dug out our old (4 year old or so?) barely used Coleman dual-tube fluorescent latern, turned it on and was even more disappointed with it than before. This Rayovac LED lantern wipes the floor with said Coleman; which IMHO is good enough to read a book by and that's it.

Took this li'l guy camping with us and, while it's no where close to the brightness of a propane lantern, I was always pretty darn happy with it. In fact I had gone through the trouble of getting a new globe, mantels and propane for our main lantern... and never used it once. Truth be told, am considering buying a few more of these and just leaving the ol' propane unit at home from now on. YMMV. For the cost, $25 as of right now, I think it's a great little lantern.

Customer Review: Bright light in a small package.
Summary: 5 Stars

I would recommend this light to my friends. Quite bright. It was a little tricky to put the battery compartment door back on but not too bad as long as you line up the arrows as other reviews indicated.

Customer Review: Bright, compact, BRIGHT.
Summary: 5 Stars

This lantern is great! I wish I'd bought several, as they were a tremendous bargain for the price I bought them. I love lights, and had been searching for a lantern for camping or emergency lighting. Most other lanterns had shameful run-time and were not energy efficient; this one runs on LED's and lasts like a tank.

I ran a few stress tests on the handle, and everything checks out fine. It folds down to fit flush against the lantern when it's not up for use, and is very durable.

The hi/lo settings are minimal; I usually use it on low because of the longer runtime, and I can barely tell the difference in light. I primarily use these indoors, rather than outside (I have used it outside, and while it's 300 lumens, it's 300 lumens in a 360 degree setting, not being focused into a beam, so things are still fairly dark in an open area) and am very satisfied with the light coverage.
A note, the light IS a pure/bluish light, which some people find cold and hard on the eyes, rather than the yellow warmer light that traditional lanterns afford.

Because of the compact nature of this lantern, it is easily portable and can stash away tidily without much fuss. With a long lasting battery life, this lantern is well worth the money.

Also, the flashing LED-the draw on that thing is nothing at all. Don't worry about it.

Customer Review: Brightest LED Lantern Yet
Summary: 5 Stars

After doing much research on finding the brightest LED camping lantern, I came across this, the Rayovac Sportsman Extreme. Its much brighter than my Coleman retro family-size lantern which claims to put out 395 lumens. I'm very happy with it and recommend it to everyone. Its bright, compact, comes in 2 different brightness modes and is only $24. It takes 3 D sized batteries. I'm not sure how long it actually lasts but I'm sure I wont be disappointed. The only flaw I see, which someone else had also mentioned was the continuous flash even with the unit off. So when you store it for long periods of time, just take the batteries out.
