Very usable in outdoor situation. Bright level of light throughout. Though still don't know how to turn off the beacon light when not in used. Fiddling with the batteries opening took a little practice. Upon a few times everything went quite smooth. For the price this is a very good product.Customer Review: Bring on the dark!

The power was out a few days ago-leaving me to continually hand crank the mini LED flashlight which has the candlepower of a lighting bug...so I got the Sportsman for the next time the trees decide to blow over the power lines.
Set up was pretty quick, base unscrews 1/4 turn, pop in the batteries, line up the red arrows on the notch, push down and turn until it locks in place. Lamp has two brightness settings operated by pushing once for full, or twice for dim. Strobe activated by holding down the button so you can rave on.
Unit housing seems pretty solid, rubber bottom, top and sides makes for an easy grip. Flashing LED makes it easy to find when you're in complete darkness.
I give it a 5 of 5, and when the power goes out again I'll give it an 11!

Wow, there is really a lot of light for only 3 D cells. If you need an area light for camping or any other reason outdoors this is the light you need. Should be great for emergency use if the power should fail. other reviews that complain about the case being hard to close must be really challenged because all you do is line up the tab and twist the bottom on. Would buy more if I needed them, highly recommend.Customer Review: Can't beat it!

A manufacturer would be hard pressed to beat this lantern's combined light output and run time, not to mention it's compact size and weight even with 3 D's in it.

If you really need a lot of light get something larger. For a small room or possibly a tent, it should do nicely. It is light and compact and suits my purposes.
