We bought it to test air leakage spots in the basement. It really works. Just point it at anything and get the external temp in seconds. Just move it slightly and see where the temp drops or rises. Very helpful. In cooking, we can get the temp of anything externally. Won't tell you the internal temp of that steak but it will tell you the temp of oven, stovetop cooking, hot soup, etc.
We give them out as gifts!

We've used this thermometer all over the house. It identified 'cold spots' needing insulation in walls, around doors, windows, electrical outlets, and lighting fixtures on walls and ceilings. We keep ours in the kitchen to measure the temperature of soup, coffee, and other hot foods. It's even a great cat toy!Customer Review: Useful and fun

This is a very entertaining and useful gadget. I found myself taking temperatures of many different things in the house -- inside the refrigerator and freezer, water boiling in a pot, different places on the television, A/V receiver, and computer. I bought the Raytek to track my tire and brake temperatures after hard driving at different race tracks. It gives me very useful information. This product is essential to see if your air conditioning is working correctly. I use it (like the professionals) to monitor the temperature of the air coming out of the ventilation ducts.
