Tools and Hardware Reviews of Rockwell RK9000 JawhorseCustomer Review: A perfect clamping tool for virtually everyone Summary: 5 Stars
I spent many hours researching this product including the reviews at Amazon.com and other sites and watching all the videos available on the sites and on Utube. I was impressed and ordered it from Amazon. Being a Prime Shipping member I get free 2 day shipping...it arrived the next day!
This prime tool may be a bit heavy at 43 pounds but if it were less then it would not be as sturdy. It is not cumbersome and can be easily carried or rolled about. Setup and take down is simple and quick taking me longer to take it out of the sturdy well packed box than to set it up.
I have not noted in any other reviews, but, it will clamp off-center items with little deflection of jaw squareness. The videos demonstrate this.
I am not going to expound on its features as they are well documented in other reviews, videos and other sources. Nor am I going to describe all the uses I have and foresee for my personal projects...once you have yours you will see how adaptable it is to so many projects including those other than woodworking. It indeed can replace one human helper and in some cases more than one.
The plastic pieces do not bother me because if they were die-cast they would not be as strong and if they were made of machined steel the additional cost would not be worth it. The plastic transport roller could have been made of a hard rubber material but, in my case, I am not going to be pulling it for miles.
Rockwell's web site has complete exploded drawings and parts lists.
I find some ads stating that it has up to one ton (2000 lbs) of clamping force and support of up to 600 pounds of weight. Other ads state 1000 pounds of force and support of 300 pounds. I don't know which is correct but, either is ample for me and should be for most users.
If you are planning at some point in time doing items wider than 37" then you need the accessory plywood jaw which will allow up to 52" width. You simply remove the included reversible jaw and slide in the optional jaw. It weighs 22 pounds and takes maybe 20 seconds to replace. It does not add 22 pounds to the unit as you are removing the included jaw which probably weighs 15 pounds (I didn't weigh it). I ordered the optional plywood jaw with my Jawhorse.
So far I have no experience with any of the other accessories. The log jaw might be my next purchase. I have several AIO and Bora clamps that I believe will handle all my guide requirements. This is a great product. This is my most exciting purchase in awhile and I would recommend it to anyone. Also this would be a good time to become a member of Amazon's shipping program...free 2nd day shipping on any order for about $80.00 per year.
Customer Review: A second set of really strong hands. Summary: 5 Stars
All the good things that everyone else has said about this product are true. It is well made, heavy and stable. I set posts for a fence using one of these per 2 posts. Level the Jawhorse, put 2 4xs 8ft long in the clamp. Stand the fence posts in the holes and put the 4x on each side. Tighten the clamp a little, position the posts at the end of the 4x (they are now 8 ft apart) and get them straight. Tighten the clamp all the way and pour the cement. I liked it so much I bought another one.
Customer Review: A very compact an versatile tool Summary: 5 Stars
I just love my jaw horse it is a very compact and versatile tool, it neatly folds up for easy storage and just as easily snaps in place for quick use. The jaw horse is very versatile, I have not needed the attachments but the jaw horse makes a wonderful solid platform for my miter saw, as well as a wonderful vise for all my woodworking needs.
Customer Review: A very worthy tool and I recommend the plywood jaw as well Summary: 5 Stars
This is a well made, solid workplace tool, worthy of all its positive reviews. Setup and operation are both simple and intuitive. Basically, a ratcheting jaw (similar to the old car jack style) is used to provide clamping action. The jaw can be reversed on its slide so you can clamp wide items or close it completely, plus the jaw faces are surfaced with hard rubber pads and are wide and rigid enough to clamp items vertically. The ratchet is operated by a foot pedal. When pressed down at full clamp, you push a conveniently located switch on the front to lock the ratchet in place. Easily released catches allow the unit to be folded compactly for storage. For some reason a roller is built in for towing it around when folded up, which I find to be basically about as useful as your appendix although it might be useful for those with some kind of restricted motion issue. The third leg is easy to seat for making use of the unit, and easily pulls clear of its seat to pivot as needed when closing up the unit (it also serves as a tow bar for towing a closed up unit on its roller). It has a clamp down screw with a plastic encased turn down that will hold it tight if you turn hard enough. It's not critical that it be turned tight, but is advisable.
I also purchase a companion piece, the Rockwell Jawhorse RK9109 Plywood Jaw Accessory Attachment, and for my purposes it's been well worth it. It's simply a replacement jaw for the one that comes with the Jawhorse, but in contrast provides a significantly wider opening. It's too long to be reversed, so you still need both jaws. Sliding a jaw on or off the unit is quite easy, so that's not an issue with using it. To fully support something as big as a 4x8 sheet of plywood, you need to add outriggers or use some other means to support the overhang (hardly surprising). The accessory comes with 2 clamps appropriate for producing outriggers from 2x2 or 2x4 stock (think in terms of the outriggers as being an 8' piece with legs clamped to each end ... the outriggers' cross piece sits inside the clamp's jaws to support the plywood's overhang).
Customer Review: A worthwhile product Summary: 5 Stars
I have a table which I work on. It was built (well built) about 50 years ago. I wanted to buy a grinding wheel and a vise, because I occasionally use these when doing my honey-dos. Mounting these on the table would have caused a loss of surface area and destroyed the surface. After seeing the ad for the Jawhorse on TV, I thought this would solve the dilemma, because I could put the grinder, wire brush, etc in the Jawhorse and just pick it up when I was finished. I recently had back surgery and have been slightly impaired, but because of the ease of using the product, I used it about 8 times in the first week, while sitting down.
