Customer Review: Best of closet organizers

I did an extensive search of closet organizers before I purchased the Rubbermaid Configurations system. My closet is 12' long and so I purchased the 4-8' deluxe closet kit as well as the 3-6' deluxe closet kit. I am not a "handy" person by nature although I like do-it-yourself projects so I can save money. First, the directions are thorough but not daunting, very easy to understand. There are several pictures of options you can choose when designing the closet kit you purchase. There are pictures that coincide with each step to assembling the closet. Once the vertical rails are installed--we had to use the wall anchors, which was a piece of cake--you can design the closet as you wish. There is NO cutting involved (unlike the Closet Maid systems). I purchased additional shelves, two canvas sliding baskets, and the tie-belt organizer. If you purchase additional shelves check to make sure you do not need extra upright extender bars. I have tripled my closet space by using this system. All in all it took me approximately 6 hours but I had MANY interruptions AND again, I was installing two separate closet systems in the same very large closet. I also installed the baskets, the extra shelves, etc. I purchased everything on Amazon as I checked the Home Depot and Lowes prices and they were much higher in price; I also got free shipping from Amazon. I highly recommend the Rubbermaid Configurations closet systems. Very easy to assemble and fun to design. Also, I like that when I change from my summer to winter wardrobe, I can make more room between the shelves for bulkier winter clothes if I need to. Our house came with closets that already had wire-shelving units for the upper shelves and not wanting to waste those by taking those out, we had to look for a better options. A friend introduced us to the Rubbermaid Configurations Closet System and we knew that this was the product for us so we bought 2 sets, intending to install them in 2 closets.
These are very easy to install but we did have to buy separate screws as the screws that came with these are too long and wouldn't go in entirely (we think this is because we have concrete walls). It took us around 3 to 4 hours to install them in both closets and afterwards, we found ourselves with plenty of parts left over. We could've spent a little more time researching and found out that there was a smaller set (the 3-6 foot deluxe custom closet kit) and gone with that instead.
Eventually, we realized that we could just install the extra shelves in our downstairs hall closet and use them as a shoe rack. Now, we're very happy.

I have never been big on the wire rack closet organization systems, but when I got the great price on this I could not pass it up. The satin nickel and chrome finish look great, and it took me an hour, at the most, to install it. It took me longer to decide which of the endless configurations to use. Since the shipping box arrived in perfect condition, and having installed a similar set twice before without issue, I didn't even think twice about tearing it open and getting down to business. At around the 85% installed point, I realized that there were a couple of smaller missing/damaged pieces in my set. But a huge, well-known company like Rubbermaid would make it right, right? WRONG. I detailed out the situation via their web site, describing the problem areas down to the part#, and a week later received the following reply from their customer service:

If you've ordered this item, you'll know that it's 1) ridiculously heavy and 2) somehow packed into the box with 110% efficiency. So once unpacked, the chances of you EVER reboxing it and schlepping it back to UPS for a return to Amazon are essentially ZERO.
Every room in my home--from the garage to the kitchen and bathrooms and beyond--has had multiple Rubbermaid products in it for my entire adult life. I was frankly shocked at Rubbermaid's complete unwillingness to help me out, and I guess I'd have been better off waiting for the next elfa sale at the Container Store.

I bought the 4'-8' organizer, installation was pretty easy, the demo of the old closet and painting was less than fun though.
My Suggestions:
*Have a good working stud sensor
*A laser line level would speed the process up a bit too.
Suggested Modifications:
* Instructions say to install tracks 86.5" above floor, after my full install I may suggest others to install at 81.5" that way you can have one shelf on top and hang clothes from and another shelf on bottom without needing extra extensions.
* Also, my closet measured about 5' X 5' instead of buying 2 of the 3-6' organizer sets, I accidentally bought 1 of the 4-8' sets. I installed one track on the left wall and the other on the far back wall. You're supposed to actually overlap the the tracks but this modification proved to be very practical and actually saved me $.
