Tools and Hardware Reviews of Safety Siren Pro Series HS71512 3 Radon Gas DetectorCustomer Review: Great Product! Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great product. We have had it about 2 months, and it has performed well. Before we bought the detector, we paid $10 for a radon test kit at Home Depot, then $30 to get the report. We found we had a huge problem, and wanted to make sure it was taken care of.
We bought the detector, and were able to watch the average drop as the radon removal system worked. We are now at the background level, which is great. I can think of a couple of improvements, such as an instantaneous readout (i.e. what the "current" reading is), but it is great to have. With this model, it takes 48 hours to get an initial reading, then displays either a 7 day average, or a long term average (i.e. since it was either plugged in or reset). Since it is portable, we were able to check all the levels of our house. Definitely recommended.
Customer Review: Great Radon Gas Detector! Summary: 5 Stars
I looked into getting one of the kits that you have to send in to a lab for the results, but after reading the reviews about this radon detector, I ordered it instead. I agree with the other positive reviews it got. It is very easy to set up and use, and the results I believe are accurate. We got a variety of readings depending on which room of our basement we put the detector - so now we are working with a contractor to install a radon gas mitigation system in our home (since the highest reading we had was around 200 picocuries per liter, or pCi/L, way over the maximum 4 pCi/L advised by the EPA.) Now we are lending this unit out to family & friends in our area. I recommend this unit.
Customer Review: Great detector for use around the house - faster than mail in tests Summary: 5 Stars
We purchased this detector to measure radon levels in our home, mainly our basement. Given the extensive coal mining in PA, radon is a common problem. We were able to get readings over a few days for each area of the basement. This is much better than the mail in kits as it is reusable and within days you can determine the levels in all areas of your home. Well worth the investment.
Customer Review: Great for monitoring trends Summary: 5 Stars
I just ran a 48-hour charcoal test on a whim, and a relatively high reading convinced me to buy a Safety Siren Pro 3. That was a year ago, and a year later I can say the Safety Siren is a very valuable tool. After about a year of testing with the Safety Siren I had a pretty good track record and learned my radon level was a bit high. On several occasions I ran the Safety Siren side-by-side with the charcoal test, and realizing that the Safety Siren averages over 7 days, not two, I can confirm its pretty accurate. If anything, the Safety Siren was reading about 20% too high, which is within its accuracy rating of 25%. This is also the accuracy rating of most charcoal tests.
Since these tests I bought a second Safety Siren and the two read very consistent between them. I've also had a mitigation system installed, the the Safety Siren confirmed within days that it was working.
For anyone testing for radon, realize that radon levels in your home vary greatly day to day. You can easily have a 8 or 10 reading with a 48-hour charcoal test when your average home levels are low if you happen to pick the wrong two days to test. The opposite is also true.
If nothing else, the Safety Siren lets you clearly see the radon peaks and valleys in your house so you know the best 48-hours to run your charcoal tests. Even better, run your Safety Siren for 6 months or longer, or run longer tests to get more accurate figures before jumping to mitigation.
Customer Review: Great for peace of mind Summary: 5 Stars
Simple, straightforward, reliable, accurate. Don't waste your money on the cheap little kits! I'm so glad we purchased this detector; it's one less thing to worry about in our 100 year-old home.
