The quality on this item is acceptable. It looks like it will hold up well. I have never actually had to shake it, because it gets shaken so much during delivery that the battery in it is pretty well charged up. As far as brightness, I would say it is about as bright as a AA battery flashlight. Everyone should have one for emergency, because it is always ready to go and you do not have to go looking for batterys for it. You have light so you can go looking for a better flashlight :) I did look around on the auction sites and found one they were selling for a slightly better price. It does make a good gift because people have not seen them before. They are usually real happy and say they will put it in the glovebox or whatever.

The Forever Flashlight uses no batteries or bulbs. Instead it uses Faraday's Principle of Magnetic Induction and a bright LED to produce light without batteries. The flashlight is shaken for about 30 seconds to recharge a capacitor and it will then provide about 5-7 minutes of light. How does this happen? As the flashlight is shaken, a magnet passes through a metal coil which, when you shake, "induces" voltage in the coil generating electricity. During prolonged use it can be shaken for 10-15 seconds every 2 or 3 minutes for bright light.
