Customer Review: A Jumpy, Poorly-Made Piece of "Equipment"

My first impression of a Mastech meter is a bad one.
The Good: It has a lot of features, the LCR functions were a selling point. Not the most accurate, but good enough for the hobbyist. The leads it came with are nice, and come with covers for both the probes and plugs. The light is a nice green color. The meter CAN be calibrated, but The Bad really outweighs any reason to send it in for calibration...
The Bad: Doesn't feel as "solid" as it should. The rubber coating is actually a part of the meter, it's not removable like most others. Removable coverings absorb shock a lot better than when it is a part of the actual plastic. Also, there is a lot of 'ghost' readings; strange voltages randomly show up and go away, and show up again. At first, it's at somewhat acceptable levels, but later, it just gets worse and worse as it is used. The on-off toggling of the LCR functions are also confusing; for some things, it has to be off, for some on, it's really hard to tell if the LCR functions are on or off, you're really just changing the meter's behavior overall.
The weird ghost voltages got so bad, I sent it back. My advice (for what it's worth): If you need these kinds of functions, and you are a hobbyist, you are probably at the stage to where you should go with something of a higher quality anyway (Fluke, Agilent), so there's really no reason to go with this no-man's-land* meter.
*At this price range, it's really hard to find a reason not to get something that can be sent in and calibrated. Like I said, if you're looking at things like this, you should probably go with something of a higher caliber.
