Tools and Hardware Reviews of Skil 2372-01 7.2-Volt Lithium-Ion Power Wrench

Customer Review: Great tool ..When they work !!
Summary: 1 Stars

I have purchased approximately 10 or so of these wrenches over then past 2 years.I purchased extended warranty for a few bucks extra. Problem with that is that there is/was such a high failure rate of these ratchets that local retailers are not renewing stock of them once they are out.

As stated by other folks, these cordless ratchets just simply quit working. End of story. So far, I have had six of them fail, all less than a year old. Even had several warranty replacement ones failed !!! There is a mass defect in this tool and Skil/Bosch needs to step up to the plate and admit it.

I have had brand new,out of the box units setting in the "Smart" charger in use for only several months[light use I might add] only to go to use it and it is dead. The charge light is green constantly with only a flicker of red when you push the trigger switch while in the charger. The charger output is there at about 16 volts but whether it is regulated voltage by the time the wrench dies,I dont know. It seems to be a battery and/or charger issue. I'm thinkin that the ole Skil Smartcharger aint so smart and have been killing the Lithium-Ion cells in the wrench.... OR cells are defective from the get-go. I don't think it is a switch problem in the wrench. Just guessing though.

Sad thing is that I LOVE this tool! It is wonderful for low torque duty as in dashboards or many light duty jobs. With this widespread failure occuring, they just don't last. Skil needs to go back to the drawing board and redesign OR repair what ever is happening to these ratchets.

The 1/4" cordless ratchet is a fantastic tool concept that just hasn't been quit perfected as a reliable product.... by any manufacturer that I am aware of.

I haven't talked to Skil for quite awhile but will be calling soon to see if they have taken positive steps to get reliable ratchets to purchasers who want and love this tool!

Customer Review: Great tool at an amazing price

You can't beat this for $20, it works in tight spaces and makes your job easy. You have to understand the limits of this tool though...

It is not a breaker bar or designed to put final torque on fasteners. There are special tools (like breaker bars and torque wrenches to do this). However, You can undo moderately seized bolts with this thing in manual mode.

This tool has just enough torque not to destroy most fasteners. A valve cover gasket or oil pan bolt should be about 80 in/lbs, so this tool takes you 1/2 way there so you can finish with a torque wrench or manual mode. People complaining about lack of torque do not understand the tool. Also, I suggest starting fasteners by hand(fingers), this tool (or any power tool) can crossthread (you don't want this).

It is mainly designed to unscrew long fasteners situated in unholy places. For example working behind a desk. Or the lower A/C air plenum bolts on a Ford Explorer, which are 2" long studs in a place where you have to strain your shoulder in a very tight area under the hood. The hard way is about 10 minutes of clicking 1/8 turns with a ratchet. Another great use would be taking off the 15 or so transmission pan bolts when you drain the fluid. And when they go back you don't have to worry about stripping the threads (again start by hand).

Having something so light and portable without wires or air hoses is a dream come true.

You can add an inexpensive attachment called a universal to this tool, and you can position the tool almost anywhere. You can also use 1/4" extensions for infinite versatility.

I can't speak for durability of this tool, since I only have it a while. It seems like a quality tool though, even the most expensive tools can have lemons. It has a 1yr warranty that can be doubled with a credit card. If I was a professional and for its price I would probably have two, keeping one at home as a backup if it breaks. I see some reviews here of professional technicians using this every day. Even if it lasted even 2 years at that price, I would still be satisfied!

Customer Review: Great tool for tight spaces
Summary: 5 Stars

The Skill 2372-01 Power Wrench is a very handy tool. It is not very fast but what it lacks in speed it make up for in torque. It has helped me alot in hard to reach areas with a drill like between studs & hanging curtain rods & hooking up my electrical stove where there was limited space. I have only used it for carpentry & not cars so I don't know how it would be in that capacity.

Customer Review: Great tool until it fails
Summary: 1 Stars

Read the other reviews, it has all been said before. I've had this tool for about 30 months. I've used it six times. It worked very well. I used it to replace a pool pump motor and it really made the job much easier. Then I noticed that it did not hold a charge for very long. Not something lithium ion batteries are supposed to do. Then it just died and cannot be charged. Tools should be dependable - - - this one falls short.

I subsequently contacted Skil Customer Service and was told that the replacement power module (no you cannot just replace a battery) was approximately $48. I paid $50 for the whole unit new. Skil has discontinued the item.

Customer Review: Great!
Summary: 4 Stars

Excellent product. Only delivers 100foot pounds, however, allows you to crank up to 400. It makes starting racheting easy. Have used it several times with great results. It comes with allen wrenches sockets, which came in very handy.
