Tools and Hardware Reviews of Smith'sŪ Diamond Field Sharpening Kit

Customer Review: Best sharpener I've ever bought!
Summary: 5 Stars

I think I've probably purchased over 50 different knife sharpeners of all different types over the years. I've bought simple whetstones (not enough skill to use well), diamond rods (never managed to get the hang of it), draw-through sharpeners (never put a fine enough edge on the blade) and electric sharpeners (CHOMP CHOMP CHOMP).

That all ended today when I bought this kit at the PX here in Baghdad. It has all the advantages of a whetstone (extremely fine edge) with none of the disadvantages (messy, hard to transport without losing, nearly impossible to get the right angle without lots of practice).

I'll start with the clamp. I was rather skeptical of the holding power of the clamp. Indeed, it almost chokes on my Gerber LMF II, but it does work with a bit of finagling. The LMF II is an EXTREMELY thick blade - much thicker than a standard Ka-Bar, so I think if it works on this one, it will work on just about any knife you can throw at it. It certainly clamps onto the blade of my Leatherman very well.

The actual clamp portion is all metal, with two thumbscrews (metal thread, plastic grip) to adjust the clamp. The first screw is a puller type screw that closes the front of the clamp onto the blade. The rear screw is a pusher-type screw that forces the rear of the clamp up to act as a fulcrum (with the front screw as the pivot point) to exert a large amount of clamping force. The two arms with guide slots are plastic, but are ABS and well reinforced. There is a thumbscrew at the back of the clamp in which the arms are locked in the up position. Overall construction seems very solid, and the plastic pieces are not a concern as very little force is placed upon them (typically, none).

To use it, you simply oil the diamond stones up with two or three drops of the supplied honing oil, thread the rod into the end of it (of note is the fact that the plastic block has a metal thread insert to prevent stripping of the threads), and slide it into one of the two slots (one for 20*, one for 25*) in the clamp arms, and let 'er rip. Other than maintaining constant pressure and an even stroke count on both sides, there is almost no skill involved. Within minutes, I was shaving my arm with my LMF II.

This stupid LMF II has been nearly impossible to sharpen in the past, as the blade is too thick for most draw-through sharpeners, and I simply don't have the skill or patience to get a good consistent angle on a whetstone, so to get a razor's edge on it within 10 minutes - while perhaps not an according-to-Hoyle miracle - was definitely an awe-inspiring moment. I started with the coarse stone at 25* to reset the edge, then switched to the fine stone at 25* for about five minutes to get a good fine edge, then switched to 20* to get to razor sharpness.

The Arkansas stone for serrated blades, sadly, is a bit of a different story. It's not "bad", it's just not as fantastic as the other two. The stone composition seems to be a bit too soft, and when running the stone up the blade chips start coming off the stone at an alarming rate. I recommend going down the blade only. It doesn't sharpen as well or as quickly, but it won't destroy the stone, either. Serrated blades (or portions of blades) typically don't require sharpening nearly as much or as often, though, so this shouldn't be a huge issue. You can get a separate small diamond rod (or the Smith's kit with one included for $42) if you need that. You can add quite a bit of extra stuff in the pouch.

The ringer in all of this is indeed the pouch. To have all of these individual pieces come with a pouch built for it makes transporting it a lot easier, and it even comes with room for more stuff (more stones, more rods, etc). It will store a few extra cleaning rods for an M16/AR15 and its attendant cloths/rod attachments, if you desire to have a gun cleaning and knife sharpening kit all in one pouch.

--Highs--

-Excellent constructions
-VERY easy to use
-Produces fantastic results in short time

--Lows--
-Serrated stone is crumbly

Overall a fantastic product; I would recommend it to anybody tired of buying knife sharpening kits that don't work or are too hard to use.
