I bought this knife sharpener for my boyfriend in December of 2008 as he is a chef and has great knives at home. He was beyond impressed with this system! It came with a little bottle of oil for sharpening. It is very simple and easy to use, even I have helped him sharpen knives (and believe me when I say, that is not my forte!). After 10 minutes of sharpening a knife it can easily cut through paper or a large leek without a problem. The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is because I wish it had something on the bottom to hold it on a hard surface better, we usually have to put a towel under it and even then it's a bit awkward to sharpen. Nice little sharpening stones. Have gotten my kitchen knives sharp enough to take the hair off my arm. I'm sure someone with more skill than me could get them shaving sharp with this kit. I don't think the stones are too small as others have mentioned. I've done several 8" chefs knives with no problems. I have had my knife set for almost ten years now, and have never sharpened any of them. Needless to say, the edges were dull and in much need of sharpening. After using this (very easy to use) set, the edges are like new. The angle guide was easy to use and helpful, and the fact that it came with honing oil was great! I'm not much of a tool sharpener yet but I'm happy with this item. The stones are just wide enought for my block plane blades. It helps to clamp it to the bench top. If you're starting out - for the money - this is pretty good.
